Postnatal Depression – Mia Olsson

Mia Olsson       Quals: BA Psych (Hons), Dip Nurs, Assoc MAPS

Postnatal Depression: Postnatal Depression is a clinical illness and not a character weakness. Feeling irritable, run down or anxious after the birth of your baby is not uncommon. If these feelings develop within weeks or even months of your baby being born, you may have PND. There is no need to suffer in silence. Visiting your doctor or psychologist may help you to move forward and feel better sooner rather than later. If you are having any thought of harming yourself or your baby, it is important consult your doctor, local hospital or your local telephone directory for emergency support as soon as possible.

Counselling Approach: Mia focuses on interventions that are based on best available evidence integrated with individual client characteristics, culture and preferences. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy have been found to be effective with PND, as well as problem solving and expressive therapies. Mia focuses initially on techniques to allow you to regain some feelings of calm quickly, even after feeling quite overwhelmed. The aim is to find the style that suits you and allows you to make progress quickly and effectively.
