Teenagers – 13 to 17 years – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Adolescents (13-17 yrs): As developing adults, adolescence can be a training ground for the strategies and values that will shape future years. Whilst adolescent behaviour can seem complex or challenging, this life stage is an opportunity for learning and personal growth.

Counselling Approach: I work with teenagers aged 15 and over to develop personal goals, address emotional issues (including those arising from bullying), as well as foster problem solving and coping skills. The reason I work with older teens is they have greater ‘agency’ -meaning responsibility for their decisions, actions, and consequences. This age group thus better fits with my counselling model, which can motivate teens to develop their personal ‘agency’ increasing resilience and self-esteem.

Current Availability: Dr White’s books are currently closed to new clients. Please Visit the M1 Psychology website for details on other suitable psychologists.

Fees: Usually $220 for 50 min consultations. Initial Consultation $260.

Teenagers 13-17 years – Dr Terry Olesen

Dr Terry Olesen      Quals: BA, MA, PhD (Psychology), Grad Certificate Career Development (Counselling).

Supporting Your Adolescent’s Well-being: Dr. Terry Olesen will bring to bear his experience as a former School Psychologist to help you as parent deal with a teenage son/daughter who has come to grief in their dealings with peers, classmates, teachers or  family members. Systemic Family and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy are the therapies of choice here.

Counselling Approach: Systemic Family Therapy (SFT) is used to view and understand the types of interaction (relationships) between family members, which can be empathetic, cold, angry, detached, hurt, or positive, among many other things.

Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) is devoted to helping you and/or other family members step back and see “objectively” the many social constructs (beliefs, memories, rules and habits) which stop one’s living authentically and vibrantly. ACT when learned and consistently practiced will help your son or daughter re-interpret painful cognitions or events; after such a process your son or daughter can then move forward towards a valued direction in life.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $195/hr; Bulk billing may be available for clients with a pension/health care card, or to full-time students. Please enquire when booking or full fees will apply.

Current Availability: Usually within a week; evening appointments are also available.

Child and Adolescent Trauma – Joey Tai

Joey Tai     Quals: BA Psych (hons), Master of Clinical Psychology.

Child and Adolescent Trauma: Unfortunately, no matter how we try to protect them, children and adolescents sometimes experience traumatic events. If the child or adolescent does not effectively process and manage this trauma, it can have severely debilitating effects on their level of functioning and overall quality of life. Trauma can range from abuse (emotional, verbal, sexual or physical) to witnessing other traumatic events (eg flood, fire, car accident). Professional help from a trained psychologist can help the young person buffer against the negative effects of trauma and to help them improve their quality of life.

Counselling Approach: In order to achieve therapeutic progress, there needs to be trust developed between the therapist and the client. This is particularly crucial in trauma victims, as their sense of trust has been negatively impacted. By using the therapeutic relationship to provide a positive learning experience, Joey is then able to go deeper to help the child or adolescent work through many of the emotions which have been not properly managed and processed. The aim of therapy is to allow the client to experience a greater confidence in themselves as well as their surroundings; the processing of their emotions being a crucial supporting factor.
