Eating Disorders – Paul Carver

Paul Carver    Quals: BSc, MSc, PG Dip Hlth Psych

Eating Disorders: Eating disorders include Bulimia, Anorexia Nervosa, and Binge Eating. Treatments in this area could have been better in the past, with many having little effect. Hence theprognosis has not always been good for someone with this problem. Now things have changed. An analysis revealed there was a clear frontrunner in terms of effectiveness, and that that was CBT-BN. THe treatment Paul uses is this one, now including some improvements and called CBT-E., or Cognitive Behavioural Therapy-Enhanced.

Counselling Approach: Paul utilises CBT-BN and CBT-E. The focus is on what is driving the disorder, which is an overemphasis on weight and shape in order to feel a sense of self-worth. It is an outpatient programme, 20 weeks long for those with a BMI of over 17.5, or longer for those with a BMI of 15 or under. Paul is happy to work with other medical health professionals as part of treatment programme.

Eating Disorders: Eating disorders can be found in people as young as seven and as old as 70 years and it is generally estimated that 2 -3 % of adolescent and adult females in Australia meet DSM-IV diagnostic criteria for anorexia or bulimia nervosa. Of course eating disorders are not limited to the female population; males can also suffer from an eating disorder.

Counselling Approach: Learn to address disordered eating through a tailored intervention with Amanda White. An evidence-based psychological treatment for eating disorders can utilise cognitive, behavioural, and interpersonal strategies. Engaging with supports is also a way to add meaning and motivation to treatment goals. Medical and dietary management are important parts of long-term recovery, so health professionals, such as a GP, often need to be included in the support team.
