Anxiety – Dr. Jan Philamon

Dr. Jan Philamon    Quals: BA (Hons) Psychology, D Teaching, JP (Qual) Qld, PhD, MAPS.

Anxiety:  How often do you find yourself stuck in ‘catastrophising thinking patterns?’ Thinking of the worst possible outcomes, believing something is far worse than it actually is, or anticipating things will go wrong. Yes…It’s nasty old anxiety.

Anxiety is a very common mental health condition in Australia. In a 12-month period, over two million Australians experience anxiety. Anxiety is a common mental health condition, and it can make people feel quite miserable. The good news is that the sooner people with anxiety seek help, the sooner they are likely to recover.

Usually, an anxiety condition isn’t developed or caused by a single factor but a combination of things. Personality factors, difficult life experiences and physical health all play a role. Research suggests that people with certain personality traits are more likely to experience anxiety. For example, both adults and children who are perfectionists, easily flustered, shy, lack confidence in themselves, have low self-esteem or want to control everything, sometimes develop anxiety during childhood, adolescence or adulthood.

Anxiety conditions may develop as a result of stressful life events, such as work place stress or job change, financial concerns, loss of employment, shifting house, family issues and relationship breakdowns. Other more serious events that may lead to an anxiety condition include the death of a loved one, verbal, sexual, physical or emotional abuse and trauma. It is important to remember that everyone is different and it’s often a combination of factors that can contribute to developing an anxiety condition. You can’t always identify the cause of anxiety or change difficult circumstances, the most important thing is to recognise the signs and symptoms and seek advice and support.

Counselling Approach:  There are several types of effective psychological treatments Jan implements for anxiety. One of which is CBT. This approach helps by teaching you to become aware of your thoughts and to consciously think more realistically. If you actively avoid situations or things that cause anxiety, CBT can help you face your fears and approach these situations more rationally and calmly. CBT can help you recognise the difference between productive and unproductive worries and teach you to let go of those negative and destructive thoughts.

Jan can also help you use relaxation, visualisation and breathing techniques, particularly muscle relaxation, to control anxiety and the physical symptoms of tension.

  • Generalised Anxiety Disorder (GAD)
  • Panic Disorder, with or without agoraphobia
  • Social Anxiety Disorder
  • Phobias
  • Needle phobia

It used to be that if you were diagnosed as a chronic worrier (GAD), a really compulsive and obsessive person experiencing unwanted or unacceptable intrusive thoughts and behavioural rituals such as checking (OCD), or someone who is chronically shy and suffers from disruptive anxiety on social contact (Social Anxiety Disorder), you had to learn to live with your limitations. Scientific innovation has brought new advances in treatment, and Paul uses the latest specialised forms of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), which are remarkably effective in treating what used to be regarded as intractable problems. Anxiety is very common, but experiencing too much of it feels terrible and it is very disabling. It also has a high social cost. Now there is no reason to put off doing something – experience new levels of wellness and get your life back within limited time frames! Panic disorder and phobias are also very responsive to treatment.

Counselling Approach: Paul has a very flexible approach, and a great toolbox from which the right solution for each person can be discovered. He uses Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Relapse Prevention and Interpersonal Psychotherapy, depending on the individual’s need.

Anxiety Disorders – Joey Tai

Joey Tai     Quals: BA Psych (hons), Master of Clinical Psychology.

Anxiety Disorders:  Anxiety can be a very difficult and crippling condition to have – it affects relationships, career and overall quality of life. It is often the case that someone with anxiety chooses to hide, avoid, or suppress their anxiety. This allows them to function on a surface level but over time, the anxiety builds and becomes unbearable, seriously affecting one’s ability to function in life. If you are tired of bearing these uncomfortable feelings and want to break free from them, a psychologist is able to help.

Counselling Approach: Coming to see a psychologist can be very anxiety provoking in itself. Joey understands this difficulty and it his his priority to make his clients feel comfortable and relaxed in sessions. He believes that the whole process of coming to see a psychologist (and managing the associated anxiety) to be highly therapeutic in itself. The focus of therapy would be to understand the anxiety better and with this knowledge, to make minor adjustments in thoughts, behaviour and overall experience of the environment. His training in clinical psychology affords him a wide range of techniques and experience in dealing with anxiety.
