Addictions:  Alcohol, drugs, computer games, shopping, exercise.
Not all addictions are bad. People sometimes need help getting perspective on their addictions so they make a sensible decision.  The question to ask yourself is what am I avoiding. Do the costs to myself and my relationships outweigh the benefits.

Counselling Approach: Having worked for 10 years with substance abuse clients in various settings I have learned to use a variety of approaches to hand addictions. I use acceptance and commitment therapy and Cognitive behaviour therapy depending on a clients previous treatment experience and their readiness to change.

Current Availability: Usually within one week.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $180 hr and $220 initial appointment. Medicare and Health Rebates available. Reduced rates may be available, please call reception for details.

Teenagers – 13 to 17 years – Dr Amanda White

Adolescents (13-17 yrs): As developing adults, adolescence can be a training ground for the strategies and values that will shape future years. Whilst adolescent behaviour can seem complex or challenging, this life stage is an opportunity for learning and personal growth.

Counselling Approach: I work with teenagers aged 15 and over to develop personal goals, address emotional issues (including those arising from bullying), as well as foster problem solving and coping skills. The reason I work with older teens is they have greater ‘agency’ -meaning responsibility for their decisions, actions, and consequences. This age group thus better fits with my counselling model, which can motivate teens to develop their personal ‘agency’ increasing resilience and self-esteem.

Addictions Counselling – Paul Carver

Addictions Counselling: Addictions are very destructive, and even though we know that we could lose everything we value as a result of them, we seem powerless to stop our behaviour.

The power of the addiction comes not from the substance or addictive object, but the internal state of the person using it. Addictions are connected to what we need for our emotional survival; they are driven by intolerable or very unpleasant feelings that we feel we need to escape from (such as numbness, anxiety, feeling flat, helpless, continually stressed, empty, down) because they feel unworkable. Going right to the heart of the problem, and working with the feelings that we cannot easily bear, Paul has found that addictions can be unravelled at their core.

Counselling Approach: Paul has a very flexible approach, and a great toolbox from which the right solution for each person can be discovered. He uses Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Relapse Prevention and Interpersonal Psychotherapy, depending on the individual’s need.

Trauma and PTSD:  Vivian has provided trauma counselling in private practice and supervised health professionals in the use of trauma-focused counselling. Traumatic events such as natural disasters, health conditions, accidents, birth and sexual trauma and domestic violence.

Counselling Approach: Trauma counselling involves initially improving self-care and strategies to manage with stress related to recent traumatic events.  Talking through the events that have caused trauma are useful to help with “processing”‘ images or memories around events.  Many individuals report nightmares, flashbacks, anxiety and depression.  Counselling has been found to be very effective to treat trauma that has occurred in the past.

Fees: Vivian no longer will be able to accept Medicare referrals due to travel and business commitments. Her books may be closed for extended periods.

Psychosis – Paul Carver

Psychosis: Many people who have been diagnosed with a “psychotic disorder” find that just treatment with medication and possibly Electro Convulsive Therapy (ECT) has not given them the help they needed.

Paul regards Psychosis as a personal crisis, rather than just a brain abnormality. People who hear voices or see hallucinations are reacting to frustrated ambitions, trauma or an overwhelming situation they could not emotionally process, rather than being “crazy”.

Rather than try to get rid of the voices or hallucinations, or fight them, which only seems to make the problem worse, Paul finds that listening to these voices and other experiences provides important information that is needed to resolve the underlying crisis at its root.

Once the so-called “patient” discovers that it’s not what’s wrong with them, but what happened to them that is salient, normality can return. Studies show this approach is more effective long-term than medication, although a combination of both can be used.

Counselling Approach: Paul is happy to work in conjunction with a psychiatrist and other mental health professionals in a treatment-phased approach to psychosis. He also uses CBT for relapse prevention, to consolidate any gains from recent hospitalisation and medication.

Adult ADHD – Paul Carver

Adult ADHD: ADHD symptoms don’t necessarily disappear in adulthood, although Adult ADHD is seldom diagnosed in primary care. Adults can have problems with memory, getting organised, concentrating, and keeping focused on things. In addition interpersonal problems caused by irritability and impulsivity can be distressing. Add to this the energy “crashes”which can occur after a person has put everything into trying to keep going at work, and life can become unworkable.

  • Standardised testing to make a diagnosis and pinpoint areas of difficulty;
  • Plant-based natural medication that can be as effective as stimulants but without the side effects (such as insomnia);
  • ADHD-specialised memory and organisation tools;
  • CBT-ADHD, a special type of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) adapted for ADHD that is effective in helping with lack of confidence, self-esteem issues and depression that often accompany ADHD;
  • Biofeedback, a recognised treatment that can improve focus and concentration.

The Psychologists listed on this page may offer bulk billing to new clients for up to 6 sessions under Medicare for those with a current mental health plan, addressed to the psychologist, and booked immediately. Psychologists will from time to time offer limited bulk billing appointments to new clients who can provide evidence of financial hardship eg. Centrelink payment.

The FREE Emotional Health Check Ups may be booked online or by calling the clinic, are totally free, and don’t need a referral.
