Hypnotherapy – Dr Alistair Campbell

Dr Alistair Campbell    BA (Hons), M Psych (Clinical), PhD.

Hypnotherapy: Hypnosis is one way for people to experience trance states. Trance is a normal altered state of consciousness. Trance is an effective way for people to communicate with their subconscious mind. The subconscious mind operates differently from the conscious mind. The subconscious mind processes emotions and understands at the level of global metaphors and images. The subconscious mind focuses especially on learning and taking over jobs to help the conscious mind by freeing it up to do other tasks.

Think of driving. This is a largely subconscious skill. Your subconscious deals with most of the driving so that your conscious mind can focus on other things- talking, listening to music, enjoying the scenery. Mostly that’s a good thing. Sometimes the subconscious mind takes on jobs that it shouldn’t. Sometimes it thinks it is helping when it’s not. Hypnosis is a way of showing you how to communicate with the subconscious mind so it is fully able to help you to achieve the things that are going to be of benefit to you.

Hypnosis is skill that we all have to some degree. It can be used to help with pretty much any situation that you can think of. Whatever your issues hypnosis can help you to learn how to use all aspects of your mind to their fullest capacity.

Approach to Hypnosis: I have been using hypnosis in therapy since 1996. I approach hypnotic trance as a usual and everyday human experience. I help you to learn how to access your ability for trance to enable you to communicate with your subconscious mind. Once you are able to do that it is possible to work out rapid and interesting ways of understanding and resolving the issues that you want to focus on.

ACT – Dr Terry Olesen

Dr Terry Olesen      Quals: BA, MA, PhD (Psychology), Grad Certificate Career Development (Counselling).

ACT – Defusing from Non-Helpful Thoughts, Behaviours, Rules: Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) is devoted to helping you the client step back and see the many beliefs, memories, rules and habits which no longer serve you. Many of us don’t realise we live in an arbitrary Constructed World of Rules and Shoulds, and so it’s no surprise that many clients I see present as ‘stuck’, ‘confused,’  ‘going backwards,’ or ‘spiralling down.’

Counselling Approach: As your ACT expert guide, I will help you see your situation ‘from above,’ so you can ‘look down’ at your rules and shoulds and experience them in a new way thereby ‘defusing’ them. We will employ proven ACT techniques in order for you to experience (again) a sense of forward movement in your life.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $195/hr; Bulk billing may be available for clients with a pension/health care card, or to full-time students. Please enquire when booking or full fees will apply.

Depression:  Depression affects approximately 1,000,000 adults and 100,000 young people in Australia each year. Despite its common occurrence, Depression continues to be stigmatised leading people to avoid seeking professional help. Some of the barriers to help seeking may partly be due to the misconceptions about Depression, for example, that Depression is a weakness of character, or that you can ‘snap out of it’. In reality, Depression is a complex and serious health condition which generally has psychological, environmental and biological components.

Counselling Approach:  Katherine is passionate and supportive in helping her clients achieve relief from their symptoms through a variety of approaches such as CBT, ACT, and IPT.

Employee Assistance Program – Dr. Jan Philamon

Dr. Jan Philamon    Quals: BA (Hons) Psychology, D Teaching, JP (Qual) Qld, PhD, MAPS.

EAP: An Employee Assistance Program (EAP) is a work-based confidential intervention program designed to enhance the emotional, mental and general psychological well being of all employees, including management. It also includes services for immediate family members.

The aim is to provide preventive and proactive interventions for the early detection, identification and/or resolution of both work and personal problems that may adversely affect performance and well being. These problems and issues may include, but are not limited to, work-related or personal relationships, health, trauma, substance abuse, gambling and other addictions, financial problems, depression, anxiety disorders, communication problems, and coping with change.

Counselling Approach: EAP’s typically provide a limited number of sessions with a psychologist, usually three to start. The first session is used to identify the issues and set goals that will be achievable in the time frame provided by the work-place. Because of the short time frame, an eclectic approach is used with emphasis on a positive, solution focused approach to treatment. Other therapies such as cognitive behaviour therapy, acceptance and commitment therapy and compassion focused therapy are all used as required to meet the needs of the client.

Current Availability: Usually within 1 to 2 weeks.

Fees: There is no out of pocket cost for approved EAP appointments. General costs run along a sliding scale depending on circumstances, usually $195 for standard appointments. Medicare and health rebates may apply. Please contact reception if you require reduced rates.

Practice Location: 16-18 Beenleigh Redland Bay Road, Loganholme, Brisbane.

Teenagers 13-17 years – Dr Terry Olesen

Dr Terry Olesen      Quals: BA, MA, PhD (Psychology), Grad Certificate Career Development (Counselling).

Supporting Your Adolescent’s Well-being: Dr. Terry Olesen will bring to bear his experience as a former School Psychologist to help you as parent deal with a teenage son/daughter who has come to grief in their dealings with peers, classmates, teachers or  family members. Systemic Family and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy are the therapies of choice here.

Counselling Approach: Systemic Family Therapy (SFT) is used to view and understand the types of interaction (relationships) between family members, which can be empathetic, cold, angry, detached, hurt, or positive, among many other things.

Acceptance and Commitment therapy (ACT) is devoted to helping you and/or other family members step back and see “objectively” the many social constructs (beliefs, memories, rules and habits) which stop one’s living authentically and vibrantly. ACT when learned and consistently practiced will help your son or daughter re-interpret painful cognitions or events; after such a process your son or daughter can then move forward towards a valued direction in life.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $195/hr; Bulk billing may be available for clients with a pension/health care card, or to full-time students. Please enquire when booking or full fees will apply.

Current Availability: Usually within a week; evening appointments are also available.

EMDR – Dr Terry Olesen

Dr Terry Olesen      Quals: BA, MA, PhD (Psychology), Grad Certificate Career Development (Counselling).

EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation & Reprocessing): EMDR is a proven treatment for post traumatic stress disorders (PSTD), and usually works best in conjunction with supportive counselling (therapy) and medication. When Traumatised (as by violence, sexual assault, war, car accident, etc) a person’s autonomic nervous system takes over and imprints the mind (via (Flight-Fight-Freeze). This can lead to a future of disturbing thoughts, feelings, or dreams as one becomes hypervigilant to even harmless situations in the present. Those suffering PTSD are at higher risk for Substance Abuse, Depression and Anxiety, as well as Suicide.

Counselling Approach: The actual procedure is for you to first build rapport with your therapist, be educated as to the process, and then allow the therapist to lead your eyes to track back and forth following the motion of the therapist’s index finger (a pass). During a pass, memories and cognitions about the event will surface in response to such motion. Both methods are good at stimulating recall but with EMDR you integrate the surfaced feelings, memories and sensations between eye-trackings. I use visual and mindfulness based exercises to help you through any incurred stress at home following a session.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $195/hr; Bulk billing may be available for clients with a pension/health care card, or to full-time students. Please enquire when booking or full fees will apply.
