Mindfulness – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a practice with ancient roots. It has been found to have many positive physical and mental health effects and has been incorporated into many therapies currently to help clients cope with internal experiences in an accepting way that promotes resilience and full engagement with life. Minduflness has been found to be particularly helpful for mood and anxiety disorders such as PTSD.

Counselling Approach: I will often bring mindfulness into therapy early in treatment to assist clients in distress in the therapy room, and give them an active skill to practice at home to increase distress tolerance. I have found mindfulness assists with getting out of unhelpful thought patterns and chronic pain as well as helping keep focus on goal-oriented behaviours. I regularly use mindfulness in my own life and so have real world application to share with clients.

Mindfulness – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a new/old evidence-based approach to help clients overcome mood disorders, trauma and stress. Countless individuals from the dawn of time have found relief from negative emotions by focusing on the senses to bring about deep enjoyment of the current moment. We can experience this anywhere, at any time … working “in the flow”, walking on the beach, fishing, trekking in beautiful landscapes, making love, cooking for pleasure, creating art and so much more where we fully focus on our senses and the moment.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is an experienced psychologist, who enjoys teaching people how to go into this state at will, to “down-regulate” and calm the mind with focused breathing and attention to the experiences perceived in the moment through all five senses.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness has a varied background being both from Eastern and Western philosophies. Within mindfulness we ask that a client is flexible, open and curious. Mindfulness has an ever increasing evidence base to back up its use within modern therapy, particularly the use of 10 minutes a day of mindful practice to help with anger, anxiety and stress.

Counselling Approach: Within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy mindfulness is used to focus the mind on current activities, to allow painful thoughts to come and go and to decrease the struggle we all experience with our thinking.

Mindfulness – Cobus Kleynhans

Cobus Kleynhans     Quals: BA (Hons), MA (Clin Psych)

Mindfulness: Clinical Psychologist Cobus Kleynhans has a passionate interest, and has pursued extensive development, in mindfulness-based treatment models. Mindfulness-based therapies have gained extraordinary ascendancy in modern psychology. There is a wealth of research in the area of neurobiology that shows how malleable the brain is and, more importantly, how mindfulness helps to enhance and promote healthy brain function.

Counselling Approach: In therapy, Cobus uses mindfulness-based practices to help individuals and couples to become aware of their attachment styles; these attachment styles are established in the early childhood dynamic between the primary care giver and child. The therapeutic aim with some individuals and couples is to make visible and revise the way they typically relate to their partners, parents, children, colleagues and even to their own experiences of themselves and the world, thereby creating new possibilities for connecting with others.
