Interpersonal Psychotherapy – Vivian Jarrett

**Finalist Telstra Business Women’s Awards 2017 – Entrepreneur

Interpersonal Psychotherapy:  Vivian has taught IPT in the Griffith University undergraduate program in the Bach of Behavioural Science and provides workshops on IPT for health professionals.

Counselling Approach:  Interpersonal psychotherapy is a very useful approach to managing mood disorders and relationship problems.  Most individuals will attend for counselling around relationships that are causing emotional distress.  IPT helps by diagnosing the emotional problem as being caused by life transitions, conflict, unresolved grief and inadequate social confidence.  IPT traditionally treats disorders like depression and anxiety over 6-12 sessions.  Vivian applies the principles in her day to day practice in combination with brief therapy approaches.

Fees: Vivian no longer will be able to accept Medicare referrals due to travel and business commitments. Her books may be closed for extended periods.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, MAPS.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy: A few individuals prefer a purely intellectual approach to therapy, but most want to feel safe and comfortable. They are looking for a counselling situation where they are listened to empathically without being judged or feeling condescended to. Interpersonal psychotherapy helps meet the client’s need to feel completely accepted and valued.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is an experienced psychologist, who provides a sense of safety and comfort in counselling. Susanne has found that confidence in the therapist is essential, before embarking on a treatment plan that the client can work with. Mutual respect and practitioner warmth facilitates successful counselling outcomes.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Human beings are fundamentally psycho-social beings. That is, we are drawn to each other for comfort and connection, and have an amazing ability to support, reassure, protect and heal each other. When we feel alone or isolated, generally we are more emotionally vulnerable to the distress caused by the problems, stresses and challenges that life inevitably sends our way. At times however, particularly under times of stress, our ability to motivate or engage others to care and comfort us can be depleted. Or it may actually be others who are causing our distress.

Counselling Approach: Ainsley‘s counselling approach in interpersonal psychotherapy is to support people to more positively ‘connect’ and receive comfort and support from important others in their lives; to establish or reinforce social networks; heal interpersonal injuries; resolve conflict or disputes; move through the process of ‘grief and loss’ of people in their lives; and to transition to new interpersonal roles.
