Health Psychology – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Health Psychology: For people suffering chronic pain following an injury, day to day activities are a struggle, sleep is disturbed, work and social life is impaired, and relationships are negatively affected. There is generally a multitude of medications taken to combat the pain but with little effect. Even though it is not ‘all in your mind’, health psychology recognises that the mind is a powerful tool and can often help you to manage the pain and restore your life to where it should be. Why not come and see me and give it a try?

Counselling Approach: Nicole has a relaxed and engaging approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to individually tailor a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Fees:   Usually $180/hr and inital appointments $220 hr. Medicare and health rebates may apply.  Evening appointments available.  For reduced rates please contact reception.

Current Availability: Usually within a week.

Body Image – Kelly Gall

Kelly Gall      Quals: BSc (Hons), MPsych (Health), MClinPsych MAPS

Weight Management: Having problems with your weight can be incredibly frustrating and distressing. Driven by a need to improve their health or concerns about what size and shape they would like to be, we often see people struggle, unsuccessfully, to lose weight and keep it off.  It is common for people to become frustrated with dieting and exercising and for them to lose motivation.  People who experience a lack of control over what or how much they eat also often feel distressed.  Binge eating, or ‘binging’, is often done in secret and followed by feelings of embarrassment, guilt or shame.  For some, these types of experiences contribute to the development of unhealthy relationships with their bodies, and can even result in depression and anxiety. For people experiencing such challenges, gaining control over their weight can result in considerable improvements in their emotional and physical wellbeing.

Counselling Approach: Kelly is an endorsed Health Psychologist and Clinical Psychologist with a particular interest in helping people to improve their relationships with their bodies, eat healthily an attain or maintain a healthy weight. Psychologists are skilled in assisting with behavioural change and Health Psychologists specialise in understanding how a person’s psychology and behaviour contribute to their health and wellbeing.  As a result Health Psychologists are well-placed to assist people in managing their weight, and associated issues such as poor body image.

Kelly utilises evidence-based approaches such as Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive-behavioural therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy and Health Coaching to help clients change their lifestyles, improve their weight and body image.  She develops tailored, holistic treatment plans that also address any emotional or psychological issues that are maintaining a client’s weight.

Current Availability: Usually within 1-3 weeks.

Fees: Initial appointment $260 and standard appointments $220/hr. Hardship rates may be available to those in difficult financial circumstances. Please contact reception. Medicare and Health Rebates available.

Health Psychology – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Health Psychology: A large body of research has established strong links between physical and mental health. When our bodies are struggling to heal from damage or disease, or we are living with chronic medical conditions or injuries, there is usually an effect on our emotional wellbeing. Therapy can help to restore emotional balance and cope with the changes associated with illness or injury, or to manage chronic pain.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to come to an understanding of how ill health can affect wellbeing, and to make links, if necessary, between current difficulties and past experiences. Treatment may involve examining current thoughts, behaviours and sensations, and using a cognitive behavioural therapy approach.Where the difficulty is long-standing and the causes originated in childhood or adolescence, therapy may involve healing those old injuries using a schema focused therapy approach. When a person spends a lot of time worrying about the past or the future, or is experiencing a lot of pain, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) may be helpful. If a person is extremely self-critical, therapy may involve developing compassion and empathy for oneself, using a compassion focused therapy approach.
