Critical Parent Syndrome: Surprisingly stress can be a good thing in our life. It is that little physical jolt that drives us to achieve things.  However, stress becomes a problem when it becomes overpowering and creates a sense of dread, anxiety or simply feeling out of control.  Ever woken up to the day just feeling like you just want to stay in bed and hide because you can’t face the day ahead?  It is these times that stress and life events are no longer motivating and manageable, but it can be addressed and help is available.

Consistent high levels, or overwhelming stress can impact on us both mentally and physically.  You might feel unsure where to start a task or activity, or that things you used to cope with are now much more difficult.  You might physically experience body pains, headaches and pick up every ‘bug’ going around. Stress can leave you feeling intolerant, frustrated and exhausted.  The human body is not designed to live in a constant state of stress.

When medical conditions are ruled out, it might be that it is the reaction of your body to ongoing levels of unmanaged stress.

Although quite common, conflict in a couple’s relationship is very distressing and if ongoing and unresolved can lead to eventual relationship breakdown, depression and anxiety conditions. Instead, why not identify realistic and meaningful strategies that can assist trust, open two way communication, negotiation and equality that healthy relationships thrive upon.

Addictions – Trudy Sheffield

Addictions: Addiction is the condition of being habitually occupied with or involved in something. Physiological or psychological dependence, such as a substance or an activity, significantly impact on cognitive processes and behaviours.  These effects negatively impact on the health status and functioning of individuals.  For example, frequent use of a substance can lead to the development of dependence and associated withdrawal, damage to physical and mental health, accidents and injury, family and social disruption, workplace concerns and violence and crime.  Trudy works with clients who are experiencing life disturbances due to addictions and are contemplating change. Individuals with drug related or other addictions deserve to be extended the same rights that apply to all. Trudy demonstrates a commitment to professional interventions with appropriate outcome goals that are practical and achievable. Continual assessment, negotiation and evaluations of these goals help to avoid discrepancies and maximize change for the client.

Counselling Approach: Trudy has an engaging and realistic approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to collaboratively develop a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.
