Stress – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Stress: Stress is a common blanket term for an intense intrapersonal experience. It may be discomfort at light anxiety or intense pressure inside the body and head in response to outside expectations. Stress results in physical changes in the body, releasing more cortisol which can be helpful for the body in small doses, and harmful in large, regular quantities. Stress contributes to high blood pressure, irritability, heart concerns, lowered immune system, inflammation and an increase in chronic pain. If you are experiencing ongoing stress it is important to learn skills to help manage it as chronic stress will reduce productivity which in turn increase stress!

Counselling Approach: To help manage stress, I work from an ACT perspective with lots of mindfulness skills to keep the client present and engaged in life rather than with the worries that plague them. We use thought challenging skills to help find more useful thinking patterns and increase problem solving skills. Interpersonal skills are also important, as much stress in our lives originates from interpersonal relationships at home, school or work.
