Stress Management – Dr Laurie Lumsden

Dr Laurie Lumsden    Quals: BA, MA, PhD, MAPS

Stress Management: Stress is the biological reaction to a perceived threat or challenge. All animals react to challenges to protect themselves, even single cell animals. Threats can involve physical danger or injury (trauma). Humans are social animals and threats and damage to relationships cause the body to react in much the same way as it does to physical threats. In mammals like us, the body reacts to get ready to protect itself.

Stress becomes a problem for humans when they do not remove or resolve the physical and/or social danger, because the danger is lodged in our memory, or when our intelligence enables us to construct credible threats. This is when stress becomes anxiety.

Counselling Approach: The nature of stress and how it develops is explained through the development of human physiology. An evolutionary model is used. Through CBT techniques, triggers for stress are identified. Strategies to solve problems causing stress are developed and/or strategies are developed to avoid the triggers. Relaxation and grounding skills are taught. Clients learn uniquely developed and owned socially acceptable ways to express emotions and thoughts resulting from stress. Self-care and social support approaches are developed.
