Obsessive Compulsive Disorder in Children: Obsessive Compulsive Disorder can be debilitating and frustrating for children and teens. It is defined by obsessions and compulsions that are time consuming and cause distress. Obsessions are the thoughts that go around and around in the mind, almost as if there is a glitch and they get stuck on repeat. Compulsions are the behaviours your child/teen does in an attempt to get rid of the negative thoughts (Obsessions) and feelings. For example a child may wash their hands over and over not because they want to, but because they feel they have to.

Counselling Approach: Leia uses evidence based therapeutic techniques in her treatment with clients. For the treatment of OCD, understanding contributing factors can help parents and children/teens work on alleviating pressure from their lives. Treatment specifically for children/teens will combine Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy. A key component to treatment is Gradual Exposure Therapy, whereby the child/teen gradually exposes themselves to the feared stimuli while utilising Anxiety Management Strategies to help them cope. After repeated exposure, symptoms reduce. Children/teens will also gain a better understanding of emotions and thoughts during Treatment, and will learn how to deal with them in an effective way; learn coping strategies to manage their anxiety such as Mindfulness and Deep Breathing; and they will also learn Relapse Prevention. Leia provides Parenting Strategies to parents and they may also be included in the therapeutic process with their child/teen, where necessary.
