Panic Disorder – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Panic Disorder: Panic attacks are episodes that come “out of the blue”. They peak within a few minutes and cause feelings of terror and alarming physical symptoms that may include: pounding heart, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, choking, chest pain, nausea or abdominal discomfort, “jelly” legs, dizziness, a feeling of being detached from oneself, fear of losing control, going crazy, fear of dying, numbness or tingling sensations, or chills or hot flushes.

People have often sought medical attention only to be told that there is no medical reason for their symptoms. People often dread the next attack and sometimes avoid places or situations where they have had panic attacks.

Counselling Approach: Nicole has a relaxed and engaging approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to individually tailor a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

Adjustment to change: Life throws us challenges at times and often with little to no time to contemplate how we are going to manage before we have to. Whether it is redundancy, single parenthood, disability, or work restructure, sometimes it is hard to imagine feeling in control again. It is possible to develop skills to manage current issues and to better equip ourselves to deal with future challenges as they arise.

Stress – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer     Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Stress: Work stress not only impacts your work life (and performance) but also affects your enjoyment of social activities, ability to function well in your family, engagement in fulfilling personal relationships, focus on your study, ability to manage your weight and general health, and sleep quality. Being able to manage this component of our lives is a critical factor in maintaining psychological wellbeing.

Work stress is not necessarily caused by negative workplaces or bad bosses (and sometimes it is). What is important is how it impacts on YOU and what YOU can do about it. How you manage it is something you have choice about but may not know where to start. Your situation may seem overwhelming and everything may seem like it is falling apart. Getting some clarity and perspective on what can change and developing strategies and skills to do this can have a dramatic effect on the quality of your life.

Phobias – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Phobias (Agoraphobia): Agoraphobia in the most general terms is a fear of being in public places. It is an anxiety disorder and in the most severe cases, people suffering from this disorder are housebound. Typically, it starts off as a mild anxiety about a particular place or situation that escalates over time into a generalised fear of being in public. Agoraphobia is a disabling fear. It is associated with panic attacks and anxiety. Often the reason behind the person not being able to be in public places, or leave the perceived safety or their own homes is the fear of having a panic attack, of losing ‘control’ or embarrassing themselves.

For obvious reasons, a person suffering from agoraphobia’s ability to attend treatment is limited. Nicole is able to assist by offering the option of home visits initially (Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Brisbane) until a person is able to attend the clinic.

Fees:   Usually $180/hr and inital appointments $220 hr. Medicare and health rebates may apply.  Evening appointments available.  For reduced rates please contact reception.
