Phobias – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Phobias (Agoraphobia): Agoraphobia in the most general terms is a fear of being in public places. It is an anxiety disorder and in the most severe cases, people suffering from this disorder are housebound. Typically, it starts off as a mild anxiety about a particular place or situation that escalates over time into a generalised fear of being in public. Agoraphobia is a disabling fear. It is associated with panic attacks and anxiety. Often the reason behind the person not being able to be in public places, or leave the perceived safety or their own homes is the fear of having a panic attack, of losing ‘control’ or embarrassing themselves.

Counselling Approach: Nicole has a relaxed and engaging approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to individually tailor a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

For obvious reasons, a person suffering from agoraphobia’s ability to attend treatment is limited. Nicole is able to assist by offering the option of home visits initially (Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Brisbane) until a person is able to attend the clinic.

Weight Loss Management: Are you desperately trying to lose weight but getting nowhere? Have you tried every diet but just can’t stick to any? Often people trying to lose weight manage to “stay on track” for a few weeks but just can’t sustain it for enough time to make a real difference to their weight. Others can drop weight quickly but put it back on again and more!

Your thoughts play a big part in your weight loss attempts and can often sabotage your efforts. All or nothing thinking is common: “Well I’ve blown it for today anyway so I might as well eat the rest of the packet of biscuits!”

Having the support of a Psychologist during your Weight loss journey can help smooth out the hurdles and mountains of despair and keep you on track. There is no magic wand but if you can have your intentions, behaviours and thoughts working together towards your goals you will have the best chance of success.

Panic Disorder – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Panic Disorder: Panic attacks are episodes that come “out of the blue”. They peak within a few minutes and cause feelings of terror and alarming physical symptoms that may include: pounding heart, sweating, trembling or shaking, shortness of breath, choking, chest pain, nausea or abdominal discomfort, “jelly” legs, dizziness, a feeling of being detached from oneself, fear of losing control, going crazy, fear of dying, numbness or tingling sensations, or chills or hot flushes.

People have often sought medical attention only to be told that there is no medical reason for their symptoms. People often dread the next attack and sometimes avoid places or situations where they have had panic attacks.

Interview Preparation: Are you looking for a new job? Are you returning to the workforce after a period or absence e.g, caring for children or after an injury? Or are you putting off looking, because you are terrified of interviews?

Interview anxiety can prevent you from taking the next step in your career. It can also cause you to stay in a job that you are not happy with, further dwindling your self-esteem and in some cases even leading to depression.

A Psychologist can help you to learn strategies to assist with managing anxiety during interviews.
