Neuropsychotherapy – Susanne Gilmour

Neuropsychotherapy: Recent research in neuroscience is better informing psychologists and medical specialists in the treatment of a range of mental health issues, including stress, anxiety, depression and trauma. Brain architecture (neural pathways)  responds to and is formed by all an individual experiences throughout the life span. Practitioners now know that the neural pathways fostering maladaptive coping strategies can be overlaid and weakened with new neural ‘wiring’ by learning different coping strategies.  Psychotherapy is the practice of helping clients learn and practice new approaches that enable the changes in the brain that promote healthier thinking and coping strategies to manage emotional pain.

Counselling Approach: My first priority when meeting a new client who may be suffering from distress related to anxiety, depression or trauma  is to create a warm, non-judgemental relationship with the person seeking assistance.  Once she/he is comfortable with me and I have heard a little of the story that has brought them to my room, I use a simple diagram of how a normal response in the brain to protect us from danger and threat can become an abnormal response to the perception of threat that may be related to deep seated memories of past experiences, and cause current unnecessary painful feelings that interfere with the enjoyment of a rich and meaningful life.  Using this diagram, I then  explain why the ‘talking therapy’ and the practice of new, adaptive  coping strategies can promote mental well-being.  From there, I will use therapeutic approaches appropriate to client needs and personality.
