Postnatal Depression – Mia Olsson

Mia Olsson       Quals: BA Psych (Hons), Dip Nurs, Assoc MAPS

Postnatal Depression: Postnatal Depression is a clinical illness and not a character weakness. Feeling irritable, run down or anxious after the birth of your baby is not uncommon. If these feelings develop within weeks or even months of your baby being born, you may have PND. There is no need to suffer in silence. Visiting your doctor or psychologist may help you to move forward and feel better sooner rather than later. If you are having any thought of harming yourself or your baby, it is important consult your doctor, local hospital or your local telephone directory for emergency support as soon as possible.

Counselling Approach: Mia focuses on interventions that are based on best available evidence integrated with individual client characteristics, culture and preferences. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Interpersonal Therapy have been found to be effective with PND, as well as problem solving and expressive therapies. Mia focuses initially on techniques to allow you to regain some feelings of calm quickly, even after feeling quite overwhelmed. The aim is to find the style that suits you and allows you to make progress quickly and effectively.

Current Availability: Usually within one week.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $180 hr (inital appts $220). Evening  and Saturday appts available.  For information on hardship rates please contact reception.

Postnatal Depression – Lauren Burrow

Lauren Burrow       Quals: B. Psychological Science (Hons); Grad. Cert. Health Promotion

Postnatal Depression: The period of pregnancy, birth, and 12 months postnatally can be an incredibly challenging as well as exciting time – sleep deprivation, feelings of incompetence, isolation, and frustration are all normal. Due to these extra stressors, women as well as their partners can be prone to Depression in the Postnatal (i.e. after the birth) and Antenatal (i.e. during pregnancy): 1 in 10 Australian women are likely affected, as well as 1 in 20 Australian men. If you are experiencing symptoms/signs of depression in this time (including lowered mood, lack of interest in normally enjoyed activities, feelings of guilt and/or worthlessness, difficulty concentrating, and/or thoughts of suicide) it is okay to admit this, and seek support and help from those around you, as well as from a professional such as your GP, treating specialist, or a Psychologist.

Counselling Approach: Lauren incorporates a number of therapeutic techniques in her sessions with clients experiencing perinatal depression, including Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) and Positive Psychology. Her approach is individualised to each client, and she treats her male and female clients experiencing Perinatal Depression with the sensitivity, respect, and non-judgmental attitude that can enable them to deal with their struggles, identify strengths/positives, and progress forward. Being a mother herself, Lauren well understands the additional pressures and expectations the role of parent can bring to your life.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $220 for initial appointment, $180 thereafter. Medicare and health rebates may apply. Reduced rates may be available please call reception.

Availability: Usually within a week.
