Eating Disorders – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Eating Disorders: When working with eating disorders, a strong link to perfectionism has become clear. Managing food and weight can become an extension of needing to be “perfect” or control the uncontrolled. Focus on food is used as a tool for avoidance of the internal experience and strong emotions which arise. Eating disorders are often syntonic, this means the sufferer will fight for the disorder as it giving them what they seek, and direct confrontation with eating disorder behaviour will elicit defiance or compliance, neither of which will alter the behaviour.

Counselling Approach: In working with eating disorders, strong attention needs to be paid to the perfectionism system and gains the client gets from eating disordered behaviour. No change will occur when the eating disorder is a ‘good thing’ and so work must first focus on identifying the costs. Following this, the client will be counselled in good nutrition and emotion regulation tools to help them face the emotions which have been avoided.

Eating Disorders – Kelly Gall

Kelly Gall       Quals: BSc (Hons), MPsych (Health), MClinPsych MAPS

Eating Disorders: For some of us our relationships with food and eating can become physically or emotionally unhealthy and we can become overwhelmed by concerns regarding our weight or shape.  Feeling out of control of our eating often feels awful for those who binge eat, leading to embarrassment, shame and secret eating. For others, feeling in control of their eating can feel very powerful and keeping a tight control on eating can be part of what helps people sustain unhealthily low weight. Whether you eat too much, too little, or are caught in a cycle of eating and then trying to somehow ‘work it off’, having an eating disorder means that you are likely spending a lot of your time, attention and emotional energy focused on food, eating or how your body looks.   As a result gaining control over your eating and improving your relationship with food and your body can be liberating.

Counselling Approach: Kelly is an endorsed Health Psychologist and Clinical Psychologist with a particular interest in eating disorders, using evidence-based treatments to address the emotional factors underlying eating disorders. She aims to help her clients achieve freedom from constant worry about food and body image, aid them in establishing healthy eating behaviours and maintain a healthy weight. Kelly is passionate about helping clients to improve their health and wellbeing and live their lives to the fullest.

Current Availability: Usually within 1-3 weeks.
