Substance Misuse – Jim Adsett

Jim Adsett   Quals: B Psych (Hons)

Substance Misuse:  Substance abuse rarely occurs without another underlying problem. The best way to approach this is to deal with all problems with the same psychologist. With 10 years experience in the substance abuse field, depression, anxiety, trauma and increasingly psychosis are part and parcel of the treatment approach.

Counselling Approach: Holistic, recovery based, client centered. Goal focused- harm minimization or abstinence being the two main goals. Depending on the clients preferences and previous experience, I use acceptance and commitment therapy, cognitive behavior therapy, motivational interviewing and transactional analysis.

Addictions Counselling – Dr David Wells

Dr David Wells      Quals: B Psych (Hons), Dip Prof Couns, D Psych (Clin Geropsychology).

Addictions Counselling: Behaviours that are not good for us are easy to acquire. Alcohol is legal, so is tobacco smoking. But it is very simple for these behaviours and others to become bad for us. Bad for our health, relationships, work lives and for the individual. We may drift into behaviours that are not legal or socially outdated. When these behaviours become a problem, we need help.

Counselling Approach: First up is admitting that there is a problem. Many clients find this a problem, although other people telling you it is a problem is a good sign. Having admitted the issue, it is important to recognise that you have done well already, and that changing behaviour is the next goal. It may be small steps to begin with, but with a good therapist by your side, anything is achievable. Work in this area of human behaviour is about noticing the good work that has been done, and learning from any backward steps that are taken.

Dr David Wells Clinical Psychologist BrisbaneFees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $220/hr; $260 for initial appointment. Please call reception to discuss hardship rates.

Current Availability: Usually within a week inc after hours.

Addictions – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett      Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Addictions: Addictions are an all-encompassing, damaging relationship with a particular (or multiple) substance or behavior. Despite knowledge of the consequences of addictions, people continue to use, harming themselves and those they love. Maintenance of addiction is often linked to avoidance of negative states, such as mental health concerns like depression and anxiety, or even feeling guilt, shame or numbness.

Counselling Approach: Rose believes identifying the biological, psychological, and social maintenance factors for addiction is crucial in developing a plan for recovery. Rose works with Motivational Interviewing, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Interpersonal Psychotherapy and Solution-Focused Therapy to best work with her clients.
