Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR): Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is an evidence-based therapy that is helpful to reduce  distress associated with disturbing memories and physical sensations. It is commonly used to treat trauma, painful memories, phobias, grief and addictions. Although the name refers to eye movements, it is effective when the therapist uses any means of stimulating both sides of the brain at once (bilateral stimulations), whether it is following a hand back and forth with your eyes, tapping your hands, or presenting tones to your ears or buzzers to your hands.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them to develop skills to manage high levels of disturbing emotions in a safe way. Once both you and I feel confident that you can handle highly distressing events, and cope with flashbacks and nightmares if you are experiencing them, then we will begin to reprocess your disturbing memories during our sessions. I use bilateral stimulation to facilitate the reprocessing, which will help your brain to process the disturbance and reduce your distress when those memories are triggered.
