Early Childhood 2-5 Years – Cassandra Gist

Cassandra Gist  –  Quals: B Psych (Hons), M Applied Psychology (Health)

Early Childhood 2-5 Years: The years from the time when toddlers learn to speak to the start of school are magical for both the child and the parents. As children begin to explore the world independently, their curiosity develops, their cognitions are engaged, and their language skills begin to introduce the social adequacies of interactions with others through relationships. The acquisition of language provides the child with new cognitive skills for self-reflection and representational thinking while opening new avenues of social experience. These have important implications for the child’s personality development through self-awareness and a sense of autonomy.

Counselling Approach: Cassandra believes therapy for this age group is best integrated with the parent. Cassandra provides a warm, empathetic approach to explore the issues with the whole family. She utilises evidence based therapeutic methods that are proven to achieve positive outcomes.  This age group represents an ideal opportunity to focus on emotions and naming them. Play therapy can engage children in these teaching with parental participation. Parents can be distressed themselves for various reasons and can be treated with psychoeducation, cognitive behavioural therapy and acceptance and commitment therapy.
