Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT): DBT is an evidence-based therapy developed for people with severe and enduring difficulties with emotional regulation, interpersonal skills and distress tolerance, who are at risk of self harm and suicide. People who have had difficult early lives and complicated relationships with caregivers may find that they have trouble containing emotions and maintaining relationships, and their emotional distress is often overwhelming and intolerable.

Counselling Approach: I work with people who have such complex and long standing difficulties to help them to understand themselves better, and make positive changes in their lives. An initial focus of therapy must be ensuring the the client is safe, therefore addressing tendencies to self harm or contemplate or act on suicidal thoughts is the first priority of therapy.

Once a person is able to commit to establishing safety, then therapy can focus on developing skills to cope with extreme emotions, distress and complicated relationships. A key skill in this therapy is mindfulness, the ability to focus on the present moment, and leave the past in the past, the future in the future, and live in the here and now.
