Childhood Phobias – Ashley Cooper

Ashley Cooper    Quals: B Psych (Hons), M Psych (Clinical), MAPS

Childhood Phobias: For most children, a mild fear of spiders or mice has little impact on daily life. However, for other children phobias can cause huge amounts of discomfort or even be completely debilitating. For these children phobias are no laughing matter and may stop them from doing the things that they love. Sadly many children are not given treatment for phobias which can mean that they struggle with fear and anxiety into adulthood. If your child is suffering from a phobia, seeing a psychologist can be beneficial in helping them to overcome this fear and become more relaxed.

Counselling Approach: Sessions with Ashley are warm, non judgmental and solution focused.  Ashley has found exposure therapy to be highly effective in helping children to overcome their fears. What this involves is gradually increasing a child’s level of exposure to the feared stimulus, which allows the child to gain a sense of control. Exposure therapy with Ashley also includes a relaxation component (which aims to help children to calm down and tolerate fear) and/or a cognitive component (which aims to help children challenge their unhelpful thoughts around the phobic object). Using a combination of these approaches, Ashley can work effectively with highly anxious children to achieve positive outcomes.
