Childhood Disabilities – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Childhood Disabilities: Childhood disabilities can include intellectual impairment, Autism Spectrum Disorders, ADHD (executive functioning difficulties), and a wide variety of congenital syndromes, however Susanne Gilmour’s special interest is in assessing and working with otherwise intelligent school-aged children with specific learning disabilities (SLD), to improve their learning outcomes. Many childhood disabilities receive support from government funding and not-for-profit organisations, but there is little support for children and teenagers who, despite being of average to above average intelligence, struggle in school with literacy, numeracy, attention and / or social functioning due to minimal neurological impairments.

Early detection and intervention is important in preventing the development of anxiety, depression, or behavioural problems at school, which often occur when a child has had a long struggle with schooling, and the  inaccurate and negative judgements (about their motivation, work habits and short concentration span) which frequently follow.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is experienced in conducting evaluations for specific learning disabilities (SLD), to assess ability, achievement, memory, and sometimes additional assessment of executive functioning or social communication, auditory processing, and speech and language. Once detected and identified, Susanne can recommend learning strategies to compensate for SLD, and provide comprehensive reporting.
