Child and Adolescent Depression – Leia Redman

Leia Redman  Quals: B. Psych; M. Psych (Clinical); MAPS; CCLIN

Teenage Depression:  Adolescence is an extremely challenging period of time in the developmental lifespan. It is a journey of self-discovery; while at the same time our teenagers face the possibility of being bullied; going through physical, psychological and emotional changes; keeping up with expectations from parents; dealing with peer pressure; and being connected to the world through social media 24/7. It is understandable then that we are seeing increased rates of depression in teenagers.

Counselling Approach:  Leia uses evidence based therapeutic techniques in her treatment with clients. For the treatment of Depression, understanding contributing factors can help parents and teenagers work on alleviating pressure from their lives. Therapy specifically for teenagers will focus on an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) approach, with the main aim being to help them be the best version of themselves. Teenagers will gain a better understanding of emotions and thoughts, and learn how to deal with them in an effective way; begin to understand their values; learn how to set goals for their future; and they will also learn Relapse Prevention. Leia provides Parenting Strategies to parents and they may also be included in the therapeutic process with their teen, where necessary.

Child and Adolescent Depression – Tiegan Holtham

Tiegan Holtham      Quals: BBSc (Hons), MPsych (Clin), MAPS

Child and Adolescent Depression: Seemingly innocent and without responsibility, it can be hard for adults to understand how young people can be depressed. But young people face a huge array of developmental challenges such as forging their own identity, learning to cope separate to their parents and family, school, academics and bullying, peer pressure, social isolation, and managing social media.

Young people often feel isolated and separate from those who care the most about them. The impulsive nature of young people means they also have a heightened risk for substance abuse, self harm and suicide.

Counselling Approach: A range of effective treatments exist for child and adolescent depression. Tiegan believes in tailoring the treatment plan to individual circumstances and experiences. For young people who struggle to talk to their parents when feeling depressed or suicidal, Attachment Based Family Therapy may be best. For young people who struggle with thoughts about themselves and their future, Cognitive behaviour therapy or Acceptance and Commitment Therapy are helpful. For young people who struggle to manage their difficult emotions, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy is effective, while for those who are perfectionistic, achievement oriented or highly self critical, they may benefit most from Compassion Focused Therapy. It is important to develop a strong relationship with young people and understanding of their difficulties, before deciding what type of therapy will suit them best.

Current Availability: Usually within one week. Appointments available Saturdays.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $180 hr and $220 initial appointment. Medicare and health rebates available.
