Stress: Work stress not only impacts your work life (and performance) but also affects your enjoyment of social activities, ability to function well in your family, engagement in fulfilling personal relationships, focus on your study, ability to manage your weight and general health, and sleep quality. Being able to manage this component of our lives is a critical factor in maintaining psychological wellbeing.

Work stress is not necessarily caused by negative workplaces or bad bosses (and sometimes it is). What is important is how it impacts on YOU and what YOU can do about it. How you manage it is something you have choice about but may not know where to start. Your situation may seem overwhelming and everything may seem like it is falling apart. Getting some clarity and perspective on what can change and developing strategies and skills to do this can have a dramatic effect on the quality of your life.

Stress – Susanne Gilmour

Stress: Stress is a common mental health issue in our highly competitive, image-obsessed society, and can have huge impacts on both physical and mental health as well as our relationships.

Counselling Approach: Before working with a client to implement strategies to deal with this very common condition, Susanne Gilmour will carry out an interview and administer a standardised  assessment to ensure that stress is the problem and not better diagnosed as anxiety and /or depression.

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and exploration of possible changes in diet, lifestyle, sleep and work patterns, exercise to boost resilience and the immune system, usually prove to be very beneficial for the client. Sometimes it is useful to discuss major life changes the client may be considering, to deal with severe stressors in their current situation. Strategies to think through making major decisions can be helpful in this case. In particular, the practice of Mindfulness  has been shown to be very effective in the management of stress.

Critical Parent Syndrome: Surprisingly stress can be a good thing in our life. It is that little physical jolt that drives us to achieve things.  However, stress becomes a problem when it becomes overpowering and creates a sense of dread, anxiety or simply feeling out of control.  Ever woken up to the day just feeling like you just want to stay in bed and hide because you can’t face the day ahead?  It is these times that stress and life events are no longer motivating and manageable, but it can be addressed and help is available.

Consistent high levels, or overwhelming stress can impact on us both mentally and physically.  You might feel unsure where to start a task or activity, or that things you used to cope with are now much more difficult.  You might physically experience body pains, headaches and pick up every ‘bug’ going around. Stress can leave you feeling intolerant, frustrated and exhausted.  The human body is not designed to live in a constant state of stress.

When medical conditions are ruled out, it might be that it is the reaction of your body to ongoing levels of unmanaged stress.

Stress: Stress is a normal part of life, and it has both a helpful and a not-so-helpful side. A little bit of stress helps to get us motivated, and helps us perform at an optimal level. Many of the most worthwhile things in our lives have involved some sort of stress. Once stress levels rise beyond their optimal level, however stress can begin to have a devastating effect on our emotional balance, our ability to sleep, our ability to concentrate, our relationship, and our overall health.

Counselling Approach: I work with people who want to reduce their stress levels by closely examining the sources of stress in their lives, and helping them to identify unavoidable stressors, and optional stressors. I also help people to think about  what behaviours they are or are not doing that might reduce their stress levels. We may also choose to look deeply at  a person’s thinking patterns and see if there are alternative ways of thinking that might contribute to lowering stress levels. I adopt a flexible approach to therapy, drawing on strategies such as motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Compassion Focused Therapy.
