Seniors Counselling – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Seniors Counselling: Sadly, unlike in other less modernized cultures, western societies view ageing as a process of inevitable deterioration and usefulness, and the elderly a burden on taxpayers. Once upon a time, the older members of society were valued for their wisdom, and supported by their families and communities when ill health and disability set in and partners passed on.

Seniors in our society are often left alone to struggle with tough issues such as the loss of  their life partner, financial hardship, the departure of their children to lives far away, ill health, and in the search for a meaningful life after retirement and when children leave home. Is it any wonder that many of our seniors commonly develop depression!

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour has found that one of the most enriching experiences for her as a counselor is working with older people, who have  deep wisdom and rich life experiences to draw upon. She counts it a privilege to work alongside older people to help them find new meaning and satisfaction in life, as they reflect with pride on their achievements in the past.
