Schema Focused Therapy – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Scheme Focused Therapy: The therapeutic system of Schema Focused Therapy (SFT) focuses on developing a healthy attachment style, emotional stability, and trust in relationships.

Counselling Approach: Amanda White can assist with SFT to help clients recognise habitual, maladaptive ways of being by identifying and then meeting core needs that were left unmet in early life experiences (a process termed “limited reparenting”). Maladaptive coping mechanisms can be challenged. Evidence-based practice shows that, through taking responsibility for personal growth, unhealthy life patterns can change.

Current Availability: Dr White’s books are currently closed to new clients. Please Visit the M1 Psychology website for details on other suitable psychologists.

Fees: Usually $220 for 50 min consultations. Initial Consultation $260.

Schema Focused Therapy – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Schema Focused Therapy: This is an enhanced form of CBT that is helpful when the difficulties someone is experiencing are long-standing, and originated in childhood or adolescence. Schemas are collections of feelings, interpretations, thought and behaviour patterns that influence the way we interact with ourselves and others, and the world at large. Sometimes, we develop unhelpful schemas that get us stuck in recurring patterns or cycles that result in repetitive patterns of difficulty and pain.

Counselling Approach: When Schema Focused Therapy might be helpful to someone, I will usually begin by asking them to complete a long questionnaire at home, and bring it into the next session. If parts of the questionnaire seem to capture the difficulties the person is having, then we will begin to identify the schemas that are troubling them. We will then think about how to tackle these schemas, through increased awareness of how they get triggered, changing behaviour to reduce their influence, challenging thinking patterns that come from the schemas, and sometimes using imagery to relive and heal early memories that may have generated the schemas.

Schema Therapy – Greta Neilsen

Greta Neilsen       Quals: BA (Hons), M Psych (Clin), Grad Dip Soc Sc (Psych), MAPS.

**Please note that Greta is no longer consulting at M1 Psychology.**

Schema Therapy: Schemas are the group of mental constructs or ideas that we have about something. Schema Therapy works with the maladaptive schemas individuals have about themselves, others and the future that are detrimental to healthy functioning. The schemas are believed to develop in childhood when a child’s needs are not met. For example, a child that is abused may develop the schema of mistrust/abuse, believing at their core that others cannot be trusted and will abuse them. Schema Therapy works to challenge the “trueness” of the schema and provide healthier alternatives to the problematic behaviour patterns that have developed to cope with the schema.  Schema therapy was developed to treat Borderline Personality Disorder but can be helpful for a range of psychological concerns, particularly when difficult childhoods are present in the client’s history.

Fully adherent DBT involves group therapy, individual therapy, phone coaching and weekly team consultation meetings which all run concurrently for approximately a year. DBT informed therapy is where the principles and skills taught in DBT are applied in individual therapy only. The developer of DBT Marsha Lineham now promotes the teaching of DBT skills in any way that can be of benefit to the client, acknowledging that the full program is not always possible or suitable for all clients.

Counselling Approach: Greta uses Schema Therapy in her integrative approach to psychological therapy. Greta works collaboratively with her clients in a supportive and empathic environment, coaching them to change problematic habits into more adaptive ways of thinking, feeling, behaving and interacting with others.

Current Availability: Usually within 1-2 weeks. Works evenings and Saturdays.

Fees: Initial $240 and standard appts $195.  The rebate under Medicare is around $84 or higher if you have reached your medicare safety net limit.
