Pregnancy Counselling: Becoming pregnant for many is a very exciting time in their lives. Social support is very important to maintain mental health in pregnancy. About one third of women will experience significant mental health complications during pregnancy such as depression and anxiety. Fear of the birth and fear of being a “good” parent can over-shadow the positive experience of pregnancy.  Some women will experience physical complications with the pregnancy, baby and weird and strange medical problems can arise out of the blue. This disrupts family, relationships, career development and financial stability.  More serious complications such as miscarriage, stillbirth, birth trauma can affect women indefinitely.

Counselling Approach:  I prefer to see women during pregnancy because it is the best time to reduce mental health symptoms, develop coping strategies that will endure through the birth and beyond. Discussing the transition to parenthood, the struggles with physical changes and how to manage careers and family are all important to discuss during pregnancy. It is much harder once baby arrives as the baby’s needs can compound the problems with lack of sleep, etc. Non-directive counselling is funded by Medicare for 3 x 30 min sessions with “pregnancy counselling” referral through you GP. I have expertise in managing more severe depression and bipolar during pregnancy and can do home visits if needed. I’m very happy to work with you GP and/or psychiatrist if that is preferred.

Fees: Vivian no longer will be able to accept Medicare referrals due to travel and business commitments. Her books may be closed for extended periods.

Pregnancy Counselling – Lauren Burrow

Lauren Burrow       Quals: B. Psychological Science (Hons); Grad. Cert. Health Promotion

Pregnancy Counselling: Pregnancy can be a time of many concerns for an expectant mother, which can range from concerns about your parenting ability, dealing with a diagnosis of a pregnancy-related health condition (such as Gestational Diabetes or Pre-Clampsia), through to wanting to explore termination or adoption options. Lauren has experience working with pregnant clients with a range of presenting issues, including depression, stress, marital issues, difficulty bonding with their unborn baby, through to fear of childbirth. Pregnancy counselling with Lauren provides women with an opportunity to work through any fears, stressors or concerns during pregnancy with a compassionate, empathetic Psychologist.

Counselling Approach: Lauren has completed Medicare accreditation to undertake Non-Directive Pregnancy Counselling with clients (3x 30 min sessions funded by Medicare with a “pregnancy counselling” referral from your GP). Lauren’s approach follows the lead of the client; what their therapy session needs are is the direction the session will go. So much can seem out of a pregnant woman’s control in this period, so she feels that it is important that pregnancy counselling sessions revolve around what is important for the pregnant woman at that time. Evidence-based therapeutic techniques including those from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive-Behaviour Therapy (CBT) in addition to non-directive counselling skills are incorporated to achieve this.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $220 for initial appointment, $180 thereafter. Medicare and health rebates may apply. Reduced rates may be available please call reception.

Availability: Usually within a week.
