Pre-Marriage Counselling – Amanda Hansen

Amanda Hansen   Quals: B Psych, MAPS

Pre-Marriage Counselling:  So much time and energy is spent preparing and planning for a wedding! However many couples don’t consider planning for the marriage that follows, by having pre-marriage counselling. Studies show that couples who engage in pre-marriage counselling are between 70-80% better off than those who don’t (Bambling, 2007). In addition, counselling before the wedding can help couples establish a positive attitude about seeking help with their marriage further down the road – giving them the best chance of a long-lasting and connected relationship.

Counselling Approach: In pre-marriage counselling, Amanda‘s focus is on providing a safe place for the couple to discuss a range of important and intimate topics related to marriage, such as finances, beliefs and values, roles in marriage, sex and intimacy, dealing with anger, and decision making. The couple are given the opportunity to compare and clarify expectations, strengthen communication skills, explore conflict resolution strategies, and set goals (both individual and relationship-orientated) for the future.
