Phobias – Claire Pang

Claire Pang    Quals: B Psych Hons, Master of Clinical Psychology

Phobias: A phobia is an intense fear of an object or situation that affects your whole well-being. At a physical level, you experience a rapid heartbeat, muscle tension, dry mouth and sweating. Behaviourally, you start avoiding the situation that has evoked fear and your life becomes more limited. Strong fears also cause great emotional distress. If the intense fear seem irrational and inexplicable, it would be natural to raise the question “why”.  Genetic imprints, personality, upbringing or recent life stresses can partly contribute to the development of a phobia. Learning about the causes of phobias is not enough to overcome your particular difficulty; a comprehensive treatment addresses physiological, behavioural and emotional aspects of fear by introducing:

  • Relaxation techniques to calm your body
  • Exposure to fear stimuli to eliminate avoidance behaviour
  • Positive self-talk

Counselling Approach:  Claire is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training in treating depression, anxiety, trauma and complex mental health conditions. She treats adults and couples, and is result-orientated, practicing a wide range of therapeutic approaches with great success.

Phobias:  Do you have a particular phobia which is blocking your ability to enjoy your life? Perhaps it is a fear of something specific – or even a fear of people. These phobias can be a very disruptive presence in your life and it can be highly debilitating.

Phobias develop from all kinds of reasons and it is vital that one first understands how the phobia developed in order to fully address it. A Psychologist can help  in uncovering these fears, and assist you to fully address and correct certain thoughts and feelings associated with the phobia.

Counselling Approach:  Sessions with Joey are first of all open and relaxed, with the emphasis on the client and understanding how he or she views the world. Experiencing and exploring the different phobias and fears, coupled with making slight adjustments in order to manage the phobia, help the individual begin to overcome their phobia in a gradual and steady manner. Phobias – Nicole Wimmer

Nicole Wimmer    Quals: B Sc (Psych), MA (Psych), PG Cert Mgmt, Grad Dip Safety Science, MAPS.

Phobias (Agoraphobia): Agoraphobia in the most general terms is a fear of being in public places. It is an anxiety disorder and in the most severe cases, people suffering from this disorder are housebound. Typically, it starts off as a mild anxiety about a particular place or situation that escalates over time into a generalised fear of being in public. Agoraphobia is a disabling fear. It is associated with panic attacks and anxiety. Often the reason behind the person not being able to be in public places, or leave the perceived safety or their own homes is the fear of having a panic attack, of losing ‘control’ or embarrassing themselves.

Counselling Approach: Nicole has a relaxed and engaging approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to individually tailor a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT).

For obvious reasons, a person suffering from agoraphobia’s ability to attend treatment is limited. Nicole is able to assist by offering the option of home visits initially (Gold Coast, Tweed Heads and Brisbane) until a person is able to attend the clinic.

Fees:   Usually $180/hr and inital appointments $220 hr. Medicare and health rebates may apply.  Evening appointments available.  For reduced rates please contact reception.

Current Availability: Usually within a week.

Phobias – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Phobias: A phobia is an intense fear response to one or more objects or situations. Phobias can develop from real experiences such as a spider bite, hearing about a scary event second hand, watching scary movies, or even just through imagination or nightmares. Phobias tend to grow naturally as the nature of fear means we want to avoid the feared object or situation, and thus our belief it is dangerous grows, and our avoidance and fear increases, a big cycle.

Counselling Approach: The single, most effective treatment for phobias is exposure therapy. This means a collaborative development of a fear ladder, where the least feared situation involving the phobia (e.g. picture of a spider) is at the bottom, and the most fear (e.g. holding a spider) is at the top. Coping skills are taught to help manage the anxiety in the exposure situation, and the extended exposure eliminates the fear.

Phobias- Melanie Green

Melanie Green –   Quals: B. Psych (Hons); Cert in Comm Services; AMAPS – Provisional Psychologist.

Phobias: Fear about certain object, situations or animals is a natural response to situations that can pose a threat to our safety. However, a phobia is different from fear for a number of reasons. First, there is an intense fear about an object, situation or animal. Second, there is an avoidance of the feared situation or it is tolerated with great difficulty and finally there is a conflict between the awareness that their fears are exaggerated or irrational and belief that the situation is not safe. The impact of a phobia can vary from annoying and inconvenient to severely disabling and can interfere with a person’s work, school and relationships.

Counselling approach: Melanie is passionate about helping clients to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. She utilises Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) techniques such as education, relaxation training, cognitive restructuring and exposure therapy to help clients change the unhelpful thoughts and behaviours contributing to their phobia.

Current availability: Usually within one week

Fees: $90 for initial and subsequent sessions. Hardship rates are also available for those experiencing financial hardship. PLEASE NOTE: There are no Medicare or Health rebates available for seeing a provisional psychologist.

Social Anxiety – Ashley Cooper

Ashley Cooper    Quals: B Psych (Hons), M Psych (Clinical), MAPS

Social Anxiety: For most people, it is perfectly normal to feel a little bit nervous in situations where we might be scrutinised by others e.g., giving a speech or going alone to a party, however for people with social anxiety, being the focus of other people’s attention can be extremely distressing. They may fear being criticised, embarrassed or humiliated, even in the most ordinary, everyday situations e.g., going to work, eating in a restaurant. Research suggests that 10 per cent of the Australian population experiences social phobia in a lifetime so these feelings are extremely common. The good news is that they are highly treatable and respond well to counselling.

Counselling Approach: There are many effective treatment options to help individuals reduce their social anxiety . Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) are two of the best supported treatment approaches. These approaches involve identifying the thoughts associated with the anxiety and  implementing strategies to overcome the fear. Additionally, relaxation and mindfulness based techniques can be useful for individual’s to gain some control over their anxiety responses which can be extremely empowering.

Phobias – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Phobias: People can develop an intense and overwhelming fear of a specific thing, and this can be very disruptive to people’s lives. Common phobias include public speaking, snakes, spiders and other animals, and germs, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. People with phobias will often go to great pains to avoid that phobic object or anything that makes them think about it.

Counselling Approach: I work with people with phobias to understand the history of the phobia, and figure out when it developed, and when it became a serious problem. I will often use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to treat phobias, because if it works, it tends to bring relief quickly. EMDR involved identifying key memories associated with the phobia, and reliving those memories in the safety of the therapy room. CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) is another option for treatment, and involves gradual exposure to the feared object, broken down into manageable steps.
