Mindfulness – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, Assoc MAPS.

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a new/old evidence-based approach to help clients overcome mood disorders, trauma and stress. Countless individuals from the dawn of time have found relief from negative emotions by focusing on the senses to bring about deep enjoyment of the current moment. We can experience this anywhere, at any time … working “in the flow”, walking on the beach, fishing, trekking in beautiful landscapes, making love, cooking for pleasure, creating art and so much more where we fully focus on our senses and the moment.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is an experienced psychologist, who enjoys teaching people how to go into this state at will, to “down-regulate” and calm the mind with focused breathing and attention to the experiences perceived in the moment through all five senses.

Mindfulness – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a practice with ancient roots. It has been found to have many positive physical and mental health effects and has been incorporated into many therapies currently to help clients cope with internal experiences in an accepting way that promotes resilience and full engagement with life. Minduflness has been found to be particularly helpful for mood and anxiety disorders such as PTSD.

Counselling Approach: I will often bring mindfulness into therapy early in treatment to assist clients in distress in the therapy room, and give them an active skill to practice at home to increase distress tolerance. I have found mindfulness assists with getting out of unhelpful thought patterns and chronic pain as well as helping keep focus on goal-oriented behaviours. I regularly use mindfulness in my own life and so have real world application to share with clients.

Dr David Wells      Quals: B Psych (Hons), Dip Prof Couns, D Psych (Clin Geropsychology).

Mindfulness: Mindfulness has a varied background being both from Eastern and Western philosophies. Within mindfulness we ask that a client is flexible, open and curious. Mindfulness has an ever increasing evidence base to back up its use within modern therapy, particularly the use of 10 minutes a day of mindful practice to help with anger, anxiety and stress.

Counselling Approach: Within Acceptance and Commitment Therapy mindfulness is used to focus the mind on current activities, to allow painful thoughts to come and go and to decrease the struggle we all experience with our thinking.

Mindfulness – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a powerful skill that can help people to live more emotionally balanced and fulfilling lives. Mindfulness is part of a number of evidence-based therapies, including Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Compassion Focused Therapy and Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT). Mindfulness can be defined as paying attention, on purpose and without judgement, to whatever is happening right here, right now. It is a skill that requires practice, and can be used in various contexts, no matter what you are doing.

Counselling Approach: I often recommend learning the skill of mindfulness and developing a regular practice when people are troubled by worries about the future, or ruminations about the past. It is also useful to assist with chronic pain. I used mindfulness in my own life to engage more fully with the present, and to notice what is beautiful or meaningful about the present, despite its difficulties. It can also be very powerful to use mindfulness during difficult and painful experiences, to re-focus your attention and learn from or de-empathise the difficult aspects of an experience.
