Logotherapy – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Logotherapy: A counselling approach through which we emphasis our search for personal meaning. It is a type of existential analysis, which anticipates that we each experience inner conflict due to developing insight into the nature of our human existence. Such insight may revolve around mortality, freedom, responsibility, isolation, and purpose, for example.

Counselling Approach: The basis of logotherapy is that life has meaning in all circumstances, even the most miserable; our main motivation in living is our will to find meaning in life; we each have the freedom to find meaning in our acts, experiences, or at least meaning in the stand taken, should we be faced with unchangeable suffering. Creative self-expression, the diversity of experience, and conscious/chosen attitudes to circumstances form the underlying meaning triangle. The central tool of logotherapy is Socratic dialogue. Logotherapy emphasises positive psychological functioning and our resources for psychological healing (resources do not include materialism or hedonism, which are seen as potential barriers to meaning). It is not an approach which addresses psychopathology.

Logotherapy – Greg Turner

Greg Turner  Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Logotherapy: Although many people have heard of Viktor Frankl, the developer of Logotherapy, and have read his seminal book Man’s Search for Meaning, Logotherapy is unfortunately not well known today. As an existential and humanistic therapy Logotherapy has three broad tenets: Life has meaning under all circumstances; our main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in life; and we have freedom to find meaning in what we do, and what we experience, or at least in the stand we take when faced with a situation of unchangeable suffering. Despite not being a well-known therapy Logotherapy is ideal for our fast-paced 21st Century where competition rules and it’s easy to lose our meaning in life. The Logotherapist works with individuals to learn to detach from situations, choose an attitude about them self, establish their own determinants regarding the way to live life and respond to the world, and thus shape their own character and become responsible for themselves.

Counselling Approach: Greg has been practicing psychology for almost 20 years and takes a practical and pragmatic approach to counselling utilising a relaxed and informal approach which recognises that as human beings we all have times in our lives when things don’t go well, sometimes we fall down, and sometimes we need a bit of help. Greg is committed to helping his clients find solutions to their problems, to improve their situations in life, and to recover from the nasty things that life sometimes throws at us. Greg utilises humanistic approaches such as existential therapy (Logotherapy), interpersonal therapy, and Mindfulness, as well as practical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. For single event trauma Greg has achieved many successes with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques.
