Child and Adolescent Anxiety – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett      Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Child and Adolescent Anxiety: Anxiety is a difficult experience for anyone no matter their age. For a young person, anxiety can be crippling and impact on their lives from home to school, interfering with ability to make friends, complete schoolwork, or sleep in their own bed. It can be difficult to recognize anxiety in a young person due to their efforts to hide it and appear “confident.” Early detection and seeking support is very important in helping young people with anxiety achieve their full potential.

Counselling Approach: Rose works with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat anxiety with children and young people. She believes understanding of anxiety and how it is maintained is vital, followed through with clear, effective skill building to treat the physical, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms.

Depression – Mia Olsson

Mia Olsson       Quals: BA Psych (Hons), Dip Nurs, Assoc MAPS

Depression: Depression is a recognised condition that can affect anyone at any time of life. You may not feel bad all day, however in general your mood and thinking can be very negative. You may also have trouble with sleep, appetite, and feel very lethargic and unmotivated. Trying to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘just get yourself together’ may help temporarily, however therapy and/or medication may be required for longer term results. If you are unsure why life looks and feels different, visiting your doctor or psychologist may help you to move forward and feel better sooner rather than later.

Counselling Approach: Mia believes that every client who attends the clinic has their own story, their own challenges to overcome, and a specific set of values that drive their life choices. Mia endeavours to accommodate individual differences and assist clients to reach achievable goals. She focuses on Cognitive and Behaviour therapies with an emphasis on self-empowerment to help you build a sense of control and mastery whilst regaining a strong sense of self.

Child and Adolescent Anxiety – Leia Redman

Leia Redman Quals: B. Psych; M. Psych (Clinical); MAPS; CCLIN

Separation Anxiety:  When a young child feels worried or anxious when having to say goodbye to mum or dad, it is commonly referred to as “separation anxiety”. Although separation anxiety is considered a natural stage of development up to the age of about 6 years, it can be a distressing time for both the child and parents. Separation Anxiety becomes a disorder when the anxiety experienced by the child becomes so intense that it interferes with their school attendance, academic performance, social activities and home environment.

Counselling Approach:  Leia uses evidence based therapeutic techniques in her treatment with clients. For the treatment of Separation Anxiety Disorder Leia uses a combination of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It is important to establish rapport with the child and this is often developed through the use of Play Therapy. Leia also actively engages the parent/s in the therapeutic process to address effective Parenting Strategies which are vital in helping their child manage the anxiety.

Depression – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Depression: Low mood reflects feelings of sadness, irritability, guilt, hopelessness, and helplessness. This depression can result in substantial changes to the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves – often causing an avoidance of activities previously found enjoyable, causing mood to worsen over time. Depression can follow the stressors associated with life changes, from a genetic predisposition to mood disorders, or as a symptom associated with physical health problems, such as hyperthyroidism.

Counselling Approach: Treatment for depression can be quite diverse, which reflects the diversity of people who suffer from this common mood disorder.  I work with adults (late teens to seniors) as an eclectic-base therapist to develop tailored treatment plans that best suits the clients’ way of working and treatment goals. Successful outcomes can be reached through interpersonal and cognitive behavioural therapies, as well as motivational holistic programs that may include such areas as fitness, nutrition, music, and art.

Eating Disorders – Tiegan Holtham

Tiegan Holtham      Quals: BBSc (Hons), MPsych (Clin), MAPS

Eating Disorders: Many people struggle in their relationships with food and their body. For those with eating disorders, food and eating becomes inextricably linked with ideas about self-worth and worthiness. Attempts to control food intake often result in initial feelings of success, which can make difficult situations feel better, but always lead to becoming controlled by food, rather than the other way around. Eating disorders are complex and life threatening illnesses, which can cripple children and adults in all areas of life.

Counselling Approach: Tiegan has a particular interest in working with eating disorder clients, and has spoken at international conferences and is published in this area. In the past, counselling approaches have come up short, and prognosis for recovery has been poor. Now however we have a range of treatments which are effective for both adults and children. Most often, treatment will involve some level of medical monitoring by a GP. For children, Maudsley Family Based Treatment and Cognitive Behaviour Therapy – Enhanced (CBT-E) are proving very effecting, while for adults CBT-E, MANTRA (The Maudsley Model for Anorexia Nervosa Treatment for Adults), IPT and specialist supportive clinical management are all showing promise. Tiegan is passionate about utilising compassion focused approaches, which new research is showing to be particular effective in eating disorder treatment.

Current Availability: Usually within one week. Appointments available Saturdays.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $180 hr and $220 initial appointment. Medicare and health rebates available.

Please note: Tiegan’s books are currently closed.
