Hoarding – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Hoarding: Hoarding is a disorder of attachment, over attachment to objects and a compulsive need to acquire more can lead to a cluttered home, isolation from friends and loved ones, feelings of shame, and intense distress at the thought of cleaning house. In addition to the psychological concerns associated with hoarding, a cluttered home leaves residents and neighbours at a greater risk of fire, hygiene concerns, falls and injuries.

Counselling Approach: When working with hoarding, home visits become essential. An initial session may be held at the office to gain information, though the majority of sessions will be conducted in the home to help the client work through the emotions tied to their belongings and learn to say goodbye. Treatment also focuses on acquiring new items and learning to window shop.

Current Availability: Usually within one week.

Hoarding: Hoarding is characterised by an inability to part with possessions because of a perceived need to save them. An individual usually experiences great distress at the thought of getting rid of any of their possessions resulting in an excessive accumulation of items. An individual may then be subjected to physical health risks such as:

  • Increased risk of falls
  • Injury or being trapped by shifting or falling items
  • Fire hazards
  • Undertaking personal care, such as bathing or cooking

(In home consultations available for clients living in the southern region of Brisbane at no extra cost)

Counselling Approach: Leonie uses a combination of Family Systems Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to develop an approach suited to her client’s individual needs. Within this framework, she remains solution-focussed, and works collaboratively with individuals to achieve the desired outcomes.
