Yu Takizawa    Quals: B Sc (Hons), M Couns, M App Psych

Happiness Development: Happiness and satisfaction in life can be one of the people’s ultimate goals for living. But, we tend to focus on negative parts in our lives and we often feel “we do not know how to become happy”. When difficult time continues, we sometime forget that “we are living to enjoy our lives and strive for happiness”.

Counselling Approach: The shape of happiness is unique for each of us as we all have unique preferences and needs. Yu can explore people’s unique needs and preferences, which are essential for achieving happiness and life satisfaction, and assist people to explore steps and options for fulfilling own needs and developing happiness.

Psychologists have been researching not only “how to deal with mental problems” but also “how to support people for achieving happiness and better life satisfaction”. In fact, many of the strategies used for treating problems in psychotherapy/counselling are also effective strategies for improving people’s happiness. Yu’s preferred approaches include Person-Centred Approach, Solution-Focused Therapy, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness-based approaches, and Neuropsychotherapy.

Counselling approach: Melanie takes an Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) based approach to happiness development. She helps her clients identify what is important and meaningful to them and uses that knowledge to guide and motivate them towards a happy and fulfilling life. Happiness Development – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Happiness Development: Happiness is a goal of many clients entering therapy, wanting to be happy whether all of the time or most of the time is an expectation in life which is not always fulfilled. If happiness is a focus, therapy to enhance happiness levels may be a priority. Happiness can be developed through therapy using the therapeutic alliance to focus on your unconscious feelings and defences which may be preventing the happiness you seek.

Counselling Approach: In Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) we work together to identify the unconscious defences which prevent you living the best life you can, and blocking the path to happiness. Using ISTDP we challenge these defences to get to the complex emotions underneath and clear old emotional pain, allowing you greater access to the internal experience of happiness.Dr Rose Gillett Clinical psychologist

Happiness development – Cobus Kleynhans

Cobus Kleynhans     Quals: BA (Hons), MA (Clin Psych)

Happiness development: Research on happiness is clear and decisive. Our life-circumstances – how much we earn, our body shape and address, etc., contributes only 10% to our overall levels of happiness.  The quality of our close and intimate relationships contributes overwhelmingly more (40%) to our sense of happiness. Happiness is therefore not the goal, but the by-product of investing and nourishing close and important intimate and familial relationships.

Counselling Approach: The best treatment approach to attaining happiness requires a model of intervention that identifies and removes the barriers that block, interfere or undermine one’s attempt to cultivate loving, caring and supportive relationships. An attachment-focused approach to treatment helps to restore the capacity for openness and trust.

Happiness development – Laura Fleming

Laura Fleming    Quals: BA&Sc, Grad Dip Psych, M Psych (Forensic).

Happiness development: Laura works with clients who aim to be more satisfied with life. Happiness can be viewed as a goal that can be worked towards. It can include attitude towards life, maintaining a balance life, and carving out enjoyable experiences. Sometimes it is too easy to get stuck in a rut or caught up with responsibilities looking after the needs of others that individuals fail to look after themselves. A brief review with a psychologist can help individuals identify their goals and achievable plans to start enjoying life more.

Counselling Approach: Laura works from a client-centred perspective – listening to the story of the client and letting the client set the goals, whilst utilising her psychological skills to assist the client to develop their own skills to achieve their goals. This can incorporate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) including Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. Happiness Development – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Happiness Development: Greg first began utilising the concept of ‘Happiness’ some 17 years ago when starting out in private practice and draws from Buddhist philosophy and principles that proposes that happiness is something to be worked at every day of our lives; but it is work that we should enjoy doing. For a garden to be productive it must be tended from the time the soil is prepared, planting the seed, tending to the seedling, nurturing the mature plant, and of course harvesting the crop, and bringing happiness into our lives is like the garden. Over time we are constantly changing and adapting to the world around us, and as we change so does our sense of self and our needs for happiness. As we change we must review our sense of self and our needs for happiness and as a psychologist Greg assists individuals to identify changed needs for happiness and develop a personal strategic plan for Happiness based on the current sense of self.

Counselling Approach: Greg has been practicing psychology for almost 20 years and takes a practical and pragmatic approach to counselling utilising a relaxed and informal approach which recognises that as human beings we all have times in our lives when things don’t go well, sometimes we fall down, and sometimes we need a bit of help. Greg is committed to helping his clients find solutions to their problems, to improve their situations in life, and to recover from the nasty things that life sometimes throws at us. Greg utilises humanistic approaches such as existential therapy (Logotherapy), interpersonal therapy, and Mindfulness, as well as practical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. For single event trauma Greg has achieved many successes with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques.

Current Availability: Usually within a week, evening appointments available.

Fees: Greg charges $195 for appointments. Medicare and health fund rebates may apply. Reduced fees may be possible for clients experiencing financial hardship.
