Grief and Loss Counselling – Amanda Hansen

Amanda Hansen   Quals: B Psych, MAPS

Grief and Loss Counselling:  Whilst we most commonly associate the loss of a loved one with feelings of grief, other events can cause these same feelings. These can include the loss of employment, a relationship breakdown, loss of a friendship, illness, and even the loss of a pet.

Loss is a deeply personal experience, rarely following a predictable schedule, and presenting unique reactions for each individual. Grief is not a linear process, and most often people experience grief in waves of emotion.

Counselling Approach: Amanda can assist you through grief and loss by helping you to process your feelings, implement strategies to help you cope with the loss you have experienced, and by providing emotional support during a difficult time.

Grief and Loss Counselling – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, MAPS.

Grief and Loss Counselling: Grief is not a mental disorder, but a normal response to a loss that has great significance for an individual, usually associated with the death of a loved one.

However, many other kinds of loss can also plunge us into grief: the loss of a pet; the end of a significant friendship; the permanent loss of health and ability; separation and divorce; the involuntary loss of a home or business we have put our heart and soul into; having to give up any long-held dream that proves impossible to realize.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour is an experienced psychologist, who listens empathically to her clients. She accompanies them through the journey from grief to acceptance, to eventually arrive at a place where a different life can be contemplated with the expectation that there are joys to be had again.

If a client’s grieving appears to become consistent with a diagnosis of a depressive disorder, then Susanne will work with the client’s GP or psychiatrist to provide an integrated approach to therapy.

Grief and Loss Counselling – Lauren Burrow

Lauren Burrow       Quals: B. Psychological Science (Hons); Grad. Cert. Health Promotion

Grief and Loss Counselling: A life without loss is a life without love – so if we have loved something, be it a person, an animal/pet, a marriage or relationship, a job, or a lifestyle, we will all end up experiencing loss and associated grief during our lives. We will all respond in our own way to these losses; there is no set way or timeframe that we should adhere to when grieving a significant loss in our lives. If you or someone you care about seems to be stuck and not able to move through the stages of grief, then you may find it helpful to talk to a professional who can gently guide you through these stages, who will respect you as an individual and what is meaningful to you in regards to whom or that which you have lost.

Counselling Approach: As with all her clients, Lauren approaches grieving clients with respect and empathy, and listens to their needs first and foremost. Lauren incorporates active listening, building on strengths/achievements, positive psychology techniques as well as some Cognitive-Behavioural Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance & Commitment Therapy (ACT) techniques where appropriate in sessions with these clients. Lauren’s aim is to encourage her clients to grieve in their own meaningful way, offering them a compassionate and supportive space to work through their grief at their own pace.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $220 for initial appointment, $180 thereafter. Medicare and health rebates may apply. Reduced rates may be available please call reception.

Availability: Usually within a week.

Practice Location: 3 / 1420 Logan Road, Mt Gravatt Central, Brisbane

Grief and Loss Counselling – Laura Fleming

Laura Fleming    Quals: BA&Sc, Grad Dip Psych, M Psych (Forensic).

Grief and Loss Counselling:  Laura works with clients who have experienced grief and loss. There are no hard and fast rules of how someone will experience grief or even when. Popular culture usually portrays grief as someone falling to the ground and crying buckets of tears immediately after someone has passed. However, grief can also be expressed by numbing of feelings, loss of enjoyment in activities, or dread and can occur even years after an event. Loss is not necessarily related to the death of someone but could be the loss associated with life changes, such as redundancy, major illness, divorce, or changes in custody arrangements.

Counselling Approach: Laura works from a client-centred perspective – listening to the story of the client and letting the client set the goals, whilst utilising her psychological skills to assist the client to develop their own skills to achieve their goals. This can incorporate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) including Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. She is experienced in working with young people from various cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Grief and Loss Counselling – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Grief and Loss Counselling: Grief is a normal, healthy, human emotional experience following the loss of anything (or anyone) of emotional value.  This may be through bereavement, relationship breakdown, deterioration of health, financial loss, or career disappointment to name but a few.  When allowed to properly run its course, grief allows us the time and processing we need to make the practical and emotional adjustments necessary to move forward into the next chapter of our lives after this loss. When grief becomes complicated, that is, the proper course is interrupted, amplified, or incomplete – longer lasting emotional disturbances can sometimes  result.

Counselling Approach: It is very important to allow grief to run its natural course, and every person’s grief experience is different. Even the same person may experience grief differently on different occasions or in response to different experiences of loss. Grief is many things: painful, inconvenient, frustrating, sad, scary. Grief is also very necessary and an unavoidable part of being human. Speaking with a supportive, informative, caring and respectful psychologist like Ainsley can help to facilitate healthy grief and loss and appropriate transition after a significant loss.
