CBT – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

CBT: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is a comprehensive therapy that as the name suggests utilises both cognitive (thinking) approaches as well as behavioural (doing) approaches and is a practical and pragmatic approach that is particularly useful for treating Depression, Anxiety problems, and a broad range of issues. Through CBT individuals learn ways to re-frame their thinking to ways that are more useful and helpful, and to adapt their behaviour to include activities which are known to increase wellbeing and mental health, such as physical exercise. Once techniques are learnt they are then practised in the person’s daily life (sometimes referred to as ‘homework’) in between sessions with the psychologist. CBT has proved to be a very effective treatment modality, but of course the motivation of the client to do the hard work outside of their visits to the psychologist will determine the success of the treatment.

Counselling Approach: Greg has been practicing psychology for almost 20 years and takes a practical and pragmatic approach to counselling utilising a relaxed and informal approach which recognises that as human beings we all have times in our lives when things don’t go well, sometimes we fall down, and sometimes we need a bit of help. Greg is committed to helping his clients find solutions to their problems, to improve their situations in life, and to recover from the nasty things that life sometimes throws at us. Greg utilises humanistic approaches such as existential therapy (Logotherapy), interpersonal therapy, and Mindfulness, as well as practical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. For single event trauma Greg has achieved many successes with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques.

Logotherapy – Greg Turner

Greg Turner  Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Logotherapy: Although many people have heard of Viktor Frankl, the developer of Logotherapy, and have read his seminal book Man’s Search for Meaning, Logotherapy is unfortunately not well known today. As an existential and humanistic therapy Logotherapy has three broad tenets: Life has meaning under all circumstances; our main motivation for living is our will to find meaning in life; and we have freedom to find meaning in what we do, and what we experience, or at least in the stand we take when faced with a situation of unchangeable suffering. Despite not being a well-known therapy Logotherapy is ideal for our fast-paced 21st Century where competition rules and it’s easy to lose our meaning in life. The Logotherapist works with individuals to learn to detach from situations, choose an attitude about them self, establish their own determinants regarding the way to live life and respond to the world, and thus shape their own character and become responsible for themselves.

Happiness Development – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Happiness Development: Greg first began utilising the concept of ‘Happiness’ some 17 years ago when starting out in private practice and draws from Buddhist philosophy and principles that proposes that happiness is something to be worked at every day of our lives; but it is work that we should enjoy doing. For a garden to be productive it must be tended from the time the soil is prepared, planting the seed, tending to the seedling, nurturing the mature plant, and of course harvesting the crop, and bringing happiness into our lives is like the garden. Over time we are constantly changing and adapting to the world around us, and as we change so does our sense of self and our needs for happiness. As we change we must review our sense of self and our needs for happiness and as a psychologist Greg assists individuals to identify changed needs for happiness and develop a personal strategic plan for Happiness based on the current sense of self.

Panic Disorder – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Panic: To ‘panic’ in certain situations is a normal reaction to an abnormal event but sometimes after people have experienced a traumatic event, they continue to have feelings of panic even though the cause of the original trauma is no longer present. Panic attacks are when a person feels intense fear, apprehension, a pervasive feeling of impending doom, and sometimes a fear of losing control or ‘going mad’. The physical symptoms can include heart palpitations, shortness of breath or even choking sensations, muscle constrictions and sweating, and in some cases some people may go onto develop Panic Disorder whereby a person experiences continuing panic attacks and develop a persistent fear of having another panic attack. This can be quite debilitating and restrict a person’s occupational and social lives, but the good news is that there are psychological treatments that can assist a person to gain control over the triggers that result in panic.

EAP – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

EAP: Greg has a strong belief that given the amount of time that we spend in our occupations, we should strive to enjoy our chosen work with the goal to enjoy our work so much that we look forward to it, and getting paid for it is a bonus! While a persons’ work content may often be challenging, it is also often the most rewarding aspect of jobs, with organisational issues such as goal incongruency often being the problem. With a strong background in EAP development and counselling Greg understands both the needs of the employer and employee. Greg’s approach to EAP work is to focus on assisting the employee to resolve their problems, and/or their families issues, as quickly as possible so they can get back into work and earning money and enjoying their job.

Stress – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Stress: We all experience stress which is our mind and our bodies’ reaction to a new situation and our bodies react in the same way, whether the situation is welcome or unwelcome.  Hans Selye, who coined the term “stress” in 1926, was quoted as saying “Without stress, there would be no life”, but of course the problem is with the ‘bad’ stress or distress. Unfortunately our fast-paced competitive world of the 21st Century is not particularly suited to human beings in their natural state, and so has also resulted in a lot of stress. Finding a balance in life, particularly our occupational life is critical for maintaining our wellbeing and reducing stress and fortunately there are a number of psychological techniques to assist people to reduce the impact of stress, ways to cope with stress and re-configure ways of living to limit stress.

EMDR – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

EMDR: Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) is a therapeutic technique which is mostly utilised in the treatment of trauma, particularly single event trauma. Psychologists and neuroscientists are not absolutely certain as to how EMDR works, but it is generally thought that the alternating stimulation of the two hemispheres of the brain desensitises traumatic memories to the point where the individual can no longer recall the traumatic event, or when they do recall the event it is no longer traumatising. EMDR practitioners receive special training in using EMDR, and it is always used in conjunction with other therapies after a therapeutic relationship has been developed between the client and the practitioner. EMDR is not hypnosis and is a safe technique when applied by an experienced practitioner in conjunction with other therapies.

Trauma and PTSD – Greg Turner

Greg Turner  Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Trauma & PTSD: What constitutes trauma is culturally and individually based and is something which tends to overwhelm a person and their normal coping mechanisms and results in that person feeling very anxious and distressed.  There are physical and psychological components of trauma reactions which people can experience from a single event, or from multiple events (complex trauma). The stress from trauma is natural and normal and is not a disorder or deficiency within the person, however it can be debilitating and it is something that can be addressed with counselling. Some people can go on to develop Post Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD), but the good news is that trauma and PTSD can be successfully treated using a combination of therapies suited to the trauma context and the individual person.

Communication Skills – Greg Turner

Greg Turner  Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

Communication Skills: Communication is vital to human existence to enable us to get what we need in life from birth until death. To be successful in life we need to have good communication skills to enable us to do well at school, at university, in our careers, and of course in our social lives with family, friends, relationships and work colleagues. Did you know that the biggest reason for relationship breakdown is due to poor communication?  In fact almost everything we do in life is related to the process and content of our communication and of course in our global community cross-cultural communication skills are required in Australia’s multicultural society and also when travelling and working abroad.
