Mindfulness – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Mindfulness: Mindfulness is a practice with ancient roots. It has been found to have many positive physical and mental health effects and has been incorporated into many therapies currently to help clients cope with internal experiences in an accepting way that promotes resilience and full engagement with life. Minduflness has been found to be particularly helpful for mood and anxiety disorders such as PTSD.

Counselling Approach: I will often bring mindfulness into therapy early in treatment to assist clients in distress in the therapy room, and give them an active skill to practice at home to increase distress tolerance. I have found mindfulness assists with getting out of unhelpful thought patterns and chronic pain as well as helping keep focus on goal-oriented behaviours. I regularly use mindfulness in my own life and so have real world application to share with clients.

Personality Disorder – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Personality Disorders: Personality disorders generally receive a bad reputation in the community and are seen as chronic or lifelong conditions. Personality issues most often presenting for treatment are Borderline Personality Disorder, Narcissistic Personality Disorder, Histrionic Personality Disorder, and Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder. I do not often see Avoidant or Antisocial Personality Disorder in a private setting, though I may in an addiction setting.

Counselling Approach: Often clients with a personality disorder are not seeking help for this disorder and may not even be aware it applies to them, I will focus on the issues they are having at present and work on personality concerns in conjunction with living the best life possible. When working with ‘personality’ I prefer to look at the emotional state beneath the symptoms and consider the unconscious defences within the client which are maintaining the personality traits.

Child and Adolescent Anxiety – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett      Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Child and Adolescent Anxiety: Anxiety is a difficult experience for anyone no matter their age. For a young person, anxiety can be crippling and impact on their lives from home to school, interfering with ability to make friends, complete schoolwork, or sleep in their own bed. It can be difficult to recognize anxiety in a young person due to their efforts to hide it and appear “confident.” Early detection and seeking support is very important in helping young people with anxiety achieve their full potential.

Counselling Approach: Rose works with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat anxiety with children and young people. She believes understanding of anxiety and how it is maintained is vital, followed through with clear, effective skill building to treat the physical, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms.

Self Harm – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Self Harm: Self harm is a term most often associated with a specific behaviour known as “cutting.” Self harm is in fact a much broader set of behaviours that are negatively impacting the person and may be long-term. Addiction to drugs and alcohol can be considered self-harm, and will eventually assist in an earlier death. Self-sabotage behaviours that reduce a person’s productivity, happiness or relationships can also be considered self harming and may lead to depression or suicidality. Typically, self harming behaviours are used to help managed negative internal states and are maintained by low connections and support from others.

Counselling Approach: When working with self harm, I explore the underlying emotional pain and unconscious defences used to avoid it. With a working understanding of the pain and avoidance mechanisms, work can begin on distress tolerance, emotion regulation and support seeking skills to manage the current behaviours and prevent relapse.

Psychodynamic Therapy – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Psychodynamic Therapy: Intensive Short-Term Dynamic Psychotherapy (ISTDP) is an attachment-based therapy aimed at relieving emotional distress and understanding emotional experience to regulate emotional experience, engage in close, meaningful relationships, and relieve symptoms resulting from emotions such as anxiety, depression, headaches and bowel issues, and conversion symptoms.

Counselling Approach: ISTDP focuses on the client’s experience in the room with the therapist which can be confronting for client’s with a more traditional view of therapy. In ISTDP, I use the patient’s presenting anxiety and experiences to form a roadmap of their unconscious defenses which interfere in living the life desired and creating unwanted symptoms such as anxiety and depression.

Anxiety Disorders – Rose Gillett

Rose Gillett       Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Anxiety Disorders: Anxiety is an automatic response our bodies have to danger. When anxious, we can move into the fight, flight or freeze response. Most often we associate anxiety with ‘flight’ though fight and freeze are just as important and not often recognized. Anxiety can also arise to internal problems your unconscious mind avoids, such as strong emotions or pain. In these instances, you might experience a more regular, low experience of anxiety in a variety of contexts, rather than a panic response to a known fear.

Counselling Approach: Working with anxiety requires a combination of relaxation strategies to calm the bodies physiological arousal (panic), thought techniques to challenge unrealistic and catastrophizing thoughts, and exposure therapy to face the fear and reduce the body’s automatic danger response. Working with internalized anxiety is similar, though we are exposing to the internally avoided stimulus, such as emotions, thoughts or memories.
