Phobias – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Phobias: People can develop an intense and overwhelming fear of a specific thing, and this can be very disruptive to people’s lives. Common phobias include public speaking, snakes, spiders and other animals, and germs, but this is by no means an exhaustive list. People with phobias will often go to great pains to avoid that phobic object or anything that makes them think about it.

Counselling Approach: I work with people with phobias to understand the history of the phobia, and figure out when it developed, and when it became a serious problem. I will often use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) to treat phobias, because if it works, it tends to bring relief quickly. EMDR involved identifying key memories associated with the phobia, and reliving those memories in the safety of the therapy room. CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy) is another option for treatment, and involves gradual exposure to the feared object, broken down into manageable steps.

Social Anxiety – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Social Anxiety: Some people find interacting with other people, particularly groups of new people, or attractive others, absolutely terrifying. They may find themselves avoiding social engagements, which can cause problemms at work, or at home, and may lead to social isolation and loneliness. For some people, the anxiety is so severe, it can develop into a full blown phobia.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them to examine and understand the reasons for their social anxiety. We may look at behaviour patterns and thought patterns, and try to develop more helpful behaviours and thoughts to assist with social situations. We may also look at significant triggering events, and reprocess the painful experiences locked in those memories to assist in creating a more positive sense of a person’s future socialising. I use a flexible approach to therapy, and may draw on strategies such as motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Focused Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), or Compassion Focused Therapy.

Schema Focused Therapy – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Schema Focused Therapy: This is an enhanced form of CBT that is helpful when the difficulties someone is experiencing are long-standing, and originated in childhood or adolescence. Schemas are collections of feelings, interpretations, thought and behaviour patterns that influence the way we interact with ourselves and others, and the world at large. Sometimes, we develop unhelpful schemas that get us stuck in recurring patterns or cycles that result in repetitive patterns of difficulty and pain.

Counselling Approach: When Schema Focused Therapy might be helpful to someone, I will usually begin by asking them to complete a long questionnaire at home, and bring it into the next session. If parts of the questionnaire seem to capture the difficulties the person is having, then we will begin to identify the schemas that are troubling them. We will then think about how to tackle these schemas, through increased awareness of how they get triggered, changing behaviour to reduce their influence, challenging thinking patterns that come from the schemas, and sometimes using imagery to relive and heal early memories that may have generated the schemas.

Self Harm – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Self Harm: Sometimes, being you, being in the circumstances you are in, or remembering the things that have happened to you, can be unbearable. Sometimes, you don’t know how to manage the overwhelming feelings you experience, and you need some way to cope. Sometimes, you resort to harming your own body to make the emotional pain into something clearer, something physical, to be in cotnrol of the amount of pain your are feeling, or perhaps to punish yourself. The problem is, sometimes it can get out of control and frighten you, or frighten those around you.

Counselling Approach: I work with people who self harm in a warm and compassionate way to understand why damaging your own body has become such an important coping strategy. Together, we might explore your reasons for doing it, and look at ways to resolve those difficulties. If that is too difficult to confront at the moment, we might look at alternatives to self harm, and figure out  ways that you can achieve the same emotional goals without damaging your body. I use a flexible approach to therapy, and may draw on strategies from motivational interviewing, Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT), Schema Focused Therapy, Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), and therapy for trauma and dissociation.

Anger Management – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Anger Management: Managing our emotions can present a challenge, and many people have difficulties controlling anger. Anger management difficulties can show up with anger directed towards others, directed towards oneself, or both. When the anger is directed externally, a person may find themselves having freqeuent conflict and arguments, lashing out at inanimate objects, animals or other people. In serious cases, a person may find themselves in trouble with the law. When the anger is self-directed, a person may find themselves criticising or running themselves down, punishing themselves or hurting themselves.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them understand the causes and triggers for their anger, and to develop alternative means of expressing themselves that don’t cause so much internal and external conflict. This may involve examining current thoughts, behaviours and sensations, and using a cognitive behavioural therapy approach. Where the anger is a long-standing problem and the causes originated in childhood or adolescence, therapy may involve healing those old injuries using a schema focused approach. If a person is extremely self-critical, therapy may involve developing compassion and empathy for oneself, using a compassion focused therapy approach.

Positive Psychology – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Positive Psychology: Positive Psychology is an evidence-based approach to life that underlies all the therapies that I practice. A mounting body of research is showing that we can improve our wellbeing and enhance our ability to experience happiness if we learn to focus on positive things, and develop regular habits of noticing the positive aspects of our lives. This is an important practice because our brains have developed to keep us alive, and therefore they have a bias towards noticing threats and problems. Given this strong tendency, it is helpful to consciously counter-act our negativity bias by establishing a deliberate focus on positive events and feelings.

Counselling Approach: I often weave aspects of Positive Psychology into the therapies that I practice. Positive Psychology involves looking for positive events and aspects of life, and deliberately focusing on them, and experiencing the feelings that they evoke in us. It may involve planning to write in a journal about a positive experience every day, or noticing a positive character trait in ourselves. It can also involve developing a regular habit of feeling gratitude for the things you have, no matter how small or insignificant, or working on forgiveness and letting go of past grievances. Positive Psychology can make very positive and powerful differences to people’s lives.

Trauma and PTSD – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Trauma and PTSD: Sometimes when people become overwhelmed by an experience, their brains can record the experience in very different ways to normal. As the brain tries to process these events and store them as usual, they can be re-experienced as flashbacks to the event, uncomfortable physical sensations, or nightmares. People can feel as if they are going crazy, and end up feeling very disturbed.

Counselling Approach: There are a number of effective and evidence based treatments for trauma. I work in a warm and compassionate way to ensure that trauma survivors develop the skills necessary to soothe themselves, to ensure that therapy can proceed safely. If a person has experienced multiple traumas, or traumas beginning in childhood, this first stage can take many months or even years. Once it feels right to both of us, we may being to reprocess the difficult memories in the safety of the consulting room. I usually use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing), a therapy developed for healing from trauma, because when it tends to provide the most rapid relief to clients. CBT (Cognitive Behavioural Therapy) is also an option for trauma focused therapy. I always negotiate the plan with my client, and develop a comfortable path for their healing.

CBT – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach to therapy that encourages people to understand their emotional lives by learning about how their physiological and emotional responses, their behaviour and their thoughts interact. We have limited control over our emotional responses, and we have some control over our thought patterns and how we react to them, and we have even more control over our behaviour. We can use the ability to direct these aspects of ourselves to achieve greater emotional balance.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them to learn about their emotional responses and habits, and why they might be troubling them at the moment. I also work with a person to understand how certain behaviour and thought patterns may be maintaining difficult emotions, or making them stronger, By learning new ways of working with our bodies, interacting with our thoughts and behaviour, we can make significant improvements to our emotional wellbeing.
