Cult Recovery – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Cult Recovery: People rarely enter a cult environment knowingly. They can find themselves out of depth over time, isolated and struggling with abusive segregating relationships, dealing with the conflict of hearing these relationships labelled in the cult community as caring, supportive, or even loving. Given the misinformation of cult groups, it can be very useful to develop a deep understanding of what a cult is, to assess the often deceptive nature of cult-related harm, and develop strategies to rebuild social and personal confidence outside of the group.  Engaging in the process to heal from and move beyond a cult experience can seem daunting. This may seem particularly true at the start, but can also be evident in recovery as insight and awareness grows along the journey away from abusive relationships with specific groups or people.

Counselling Approach: Amanda’s approach to cult recovery is founded on developing a trusting and supportive relationship first. This relationship is strengths focused, based on an education framework, and aims to reconnect confidence in critical thinking skills. Beliefs and values before, during, and after cult involvement are often worth taking a closer look at. Emotional regulation strategies may be a central tenet of therapy depending on the cult experience. Strategies may address a wide range of emotional states, such as trauma, anxiety, dissociation, as well as grief and loss, anger and guilt or shame. Ultimately we are working towards resilience, discovering purpose and self-identity after the cult.

Depression – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Depression: Low mood reflects feelings of sadness, irritability, guilt, hopelessness, and helplessness. This depression can result in substantial changes to the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves – often causing an avoidance of activities previously found enjoyable, causing mood to worsen over time. Depression can follow the stressors associated with life changes, from a genetic predisposition to mood disorders, or as a symptom associated with physical health problems, such as hyperthyroidism.

Counselling Approach: Treatment for depression can be quite diverse, which reflects the diversity of people who suffer from this common mood disorder.  I work with adults (late teens to seniors) as an eclectic-base therapist to develop tailored treatment plans that best suits the clients’ way of working and treatment goals. Successful outcomes can be reached through interpersonal and cognitive behavioural therapies, as well as motivational holistic programs that may include such areas as fitness, nutrition, music, and art.

Hypnotherapy – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White certified hypnotherapistDr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Hypnotherapy: Human beings regularly and naturally alter our states of consciousness. Consider, for example, the differences between feeling alert, daydreaming, reading a good book or watching TV, and sleep. Hypnosis, an experience entered into through a process termed induction, sets up a state of consciousness where we feel relaxed, responsive, and receptive to suggestion.

Hypnosis is thought to engage with those unconscious, automatic processes that we may define behaviourally as habits, or emotionally as our reactive self. It may be useful to look at such habits or reactivity as our unconscious mind’s attempt at finding a solution to a life problem.

Hypnotherapy is simply a form of psychotherapy conducted whilst the client is in a state of hypnosis. As is generally the case with psychological care the aim is beneficial change, but here the mechanism for change bypasses the conscious, logical mind and focuses instead on altering motivations and behaviours at an unconscious level. As part of therapy clients may also be educated in self-hypnotic conditioning.

If you are change ready, and researching this topic suggests you may well be contemplating a way to address something in your life, then hypnotherapy with a professional hypnotherapist could be a viable way to move forward with new and adaptive life solutions.  Bulimia and smoking cessation are areas where hypnotherapy has well-validated treatment outcomes.  Other areas relevant for hypnotherapy treatment include stress and emotional regulation, insomnia, subclinical depression, anxiety, difficulties with a habit, addiction, and improving wellbeing.

Counselling Approach: Dr Amanda White offers tailored treatment plans using evidence-based therapy. Amanda is certified with the American Board of Hypnotherapy, and employs both the Ericksonian model of hypnotherapy and Cognitive Behavioural Hypnotherapy (CBH), although direct suggestion techniques can also be utilised depending on client needs. Often hypnotherapy is integrated as part of an eclectic treatment model. In this way, clients are asked to engage in other active therapeutic domains in a supported and more comprehensive treatment setting.

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Psychology Supervision: Dr Amanda White is a STAP accredited supervisor, recognised by the Psychology Board of Australia. She provides supervision to psychologists and counsellors in professional evidence-based practice. ABI – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Acquired Brain Injury: Permanent changes in cognitive, emotional, and memory functioning can occur following damage to the brain. As a result, a person’s behaviour and capacity can also change. Psychological services can assist with emotional regulation (e.g. depression and anger), facilitating problem solving, and decreasing compulsivity.

Counselling Approach: Understanding behaviours which can be both complex and challenging is integral to developing a successful treatment plan. For ABI, a solid assessment foundation is required. The diversity of personal and relational issues that arise from ABI then requires a tailored approach to best suit client goals. Depending on the severity of the ABI, best practice may reflect a multisystemic approach that includes multiple stakeholders, e.g., family members or community groups. By fostering resilience and active coping skills, many persons with ABI have reported positive treatment outcomes.

Logotherapy – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Logotherapy: A counselling approach through which we emphasis our search for personal meaning. It is a type of existential analysis, which anticipates that we each experience inner conflict due to developing insight into the nature of our human existence. Such insight may revolve around mortality, freedom, responsibility, isolation, and purpose, for example.

Counselling Approach: The basis of logotherapy is that life has meaning in all circumstances, even the most miserable; our main motivation in living is our will to find meaning in life; we each have the freedom to find meaning in our acts, experiences, or at least meaning in the stand taken, should we be faced with unchangeable suffering. Creative self-expression, the diversity of experience, and conscious/chosen attitudes to circumstances form the underlying meaning triangle. The central tool of logotherapy is Socratic dialogue. Logotherapy emphasises positive psychological functioning and our resources for psychological healing (resources do not include materialism or hedonism, which are seen as potential barriers to meaning). It is not an approach which addresses psychopathology.

Adjustment to Change – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Adjustment to Change: One thing we can be sure of in life is that change is inevitable. Whether we welcome a change, or fight the change that is happening, stress can be part of this process. Signs that you may be having issues with adjustment to change include feeling down or unusually elevated, being self-destructive, having poor sleep quality, ongoing issues with concentration and/or decision making, as well as anxiety symptoms. Beyond managing the change itself, adjustment issues can lead us to feel like we’ve lost our emotional balance. If this sounds familiar, maybe it’s time to get that balance back.

Counselling Approach: Amanda finds adjustment to change is usually addressed effectively brief therapy addressing emotional wellbeing, assuming there are no other pre-existing or co-occurring issues of note.
