Depression – Mia Olsson

Mia Olsson       Quals: BA Psych (Hons), Dip Nurs, Assoc MAPS

Depression: Depression is a recognised condition that can affect anyone at any time of life. You may not feel bad all day, however in general your mood and thinking can be very negative. You may also have trouble with sleep, appetite, and feel very lethargic and unmotivated. Trying to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘just get yourself together’ may help temporarily, however therapy and/or medication may be required for longer term results. If you are unsure why life looks and feels different, visiting your doctor or psychologist may help you to move forward and feel better sooner rather than later.

Counselling Approach: Mia believes that every client who attends the clinic has their own story, their own challenges to overcome, and a specific set of values that drive their life choices. Mia endeavours to accommodate individual differences and assist clients to reach achievable goals. She focuses on Cognitive and Behaviour therapies with an emphasis on self-empowerment to help you build a sense of control and mastery whilst regaining a strong sense of self.

Current Availability: Usually within one week.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $155 hr. For information on hardship rates please contact reception. Please note that Mia will only be seeing private clients in 2018 and no referrals under Medicare.

Depression – Dr Amanda White

Dr Amanda White   Quals: PhD, B Psych (Hons), B Beh Sc, DipH, MAPS.

Depression: Low mood reflects feelings of sadness, irritability, guilt, hopelessness, and helplessness. This depression can result in substantial changes to the way a person thinks, feels, and behaves – often causing an avoidance of activities previously found enjoyable, causing mood to worsen over time. Depression can follow the stressors associated with life changes, from a genetic predisposition to mood disorders, or as a symptom associated with physical health problems, such as hyperthyroidism.

Counselling Approach: Treatment for depression can be quite diverse, which reflects the diversity of people who suffer from this common mood disorder.  I work with adults (late teens to seniors) as an eclectic-base therapist to develop tailored treatment plans that best suits the clients’ way of working and treatment goals. Successful outcomes can be reached through interpersonal and cognitive behavioural therapies, as well as motivational holistic programs that may include such areas as fitness, nutrition, music, and art.

Current Availability: Dr White’s books are currently closed to new clients. Please Visit the M1 Psychology website for details on other suitable psychologists.

Fees: Usually $220 for 50 min consultations. Initial Consultation $260.

Depression – Susanne Gilmour

Susanne Gilmour     Quals: BA, Cert Teach, Grad Dip Social Science, Grad Dip Psych, MAPS.

Depression: Depression has many causes, types and has different characteristics, depending on possible interactions between inherent and situational factors, gender, age and individual history.

Counselling Approach: Susanne Gilmour will thoroughly assess all possible causal factors before deciding with the client what therapeutic approach to take. The client and their treating GP or psychiatrist might decide that medication will be helpful, but extended psychological treatment has been shown to significantly reduce the intensity and reduce the possibility of depression recurring. Susanne provides empathic counseling to explore client experiences and background, and utilises Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Schema Therapy if the depression is long term and resistant to other approaches, to help clients return to good health.

Depression – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Depression: Some people find themselves struggling with low mood, poor motivations, and changes to appetite, energy levels and sleep. The difficulties can be severe, and some people may struggle to find meaning in life or hope for the future.

Counselling Approach: In order to help a person improve low mood, it is important to look closely at the reasons for the mood difficulty. In some people, the mood problems are linked to high levels of stress, and a stress management plan may be necessary. Other people notice certain thinking patterns that maintain their low mood, so skills to manage or address these thought patterns may be beneficial. For some people, the mood difficulty may be linked to relationship difficulties, or problems maintaining relationships, in which case communication and relationship skills may be needed. Treatment may involve examining current thoughts, behaviours and sensations, and using a cognitive behavioural therapy approach.

Where the difficulty is long-standing and the causes originated in childhood or adolescence, therapy may involve healing those old injuries using a schema focused therapy approach. When a person spends a lot of time worrying about the past or the future, an acceptance and commitment therapy approach may be helpful. If a person is extremely self-critical, therapy may involved developing compassion and empathy for oneself, using a compassion focused therapy approach.

Depression – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Depression: Sadness is a normal human experience – we all feel low, flat, disappointed and sad as a healthy and adaptive response to events. Depression is different to ‘healthy’ sadness in that it is  experienced more intensely and largely urelentingly, for a longer period of time, and at a far greater cost to the normal life and functioning of sufferers. Depression is also experienced differently by different individuals – for example males who are depressed are less likely to have a sadness-dominant depression and more likely to experience greater irritability and/or physical complaints in response to the ‘hopelessness’ and ‘despair’ of depression. Depression is in fact one of the most common mental health problems with roughly one in five people experiencing the condition at some stage in their lives.

There are a number of factors which increase the risk of onset of depression: some of these relate to recent events (stress, disputes, disappointments, recent hardship, alcohol and substance use); and other risk factors relate to  person-centred factors (certain personality traits like perfectionism, history of adverse experiences, genetics and biology, health).

Counselling Approach: In treating depression, Ainsley utilises a variety of therapeautic approaches which fall within the family of Cognitive Based Therapies, and Interpersonal Psychotherapies.  She works collaboratively with the client to identify the aspects of their life and psyche which are in relative ‘good health’, and engages and builds these elements against those parts which are in ‘poor health’ or very affected by the impact of depression.

By teaching people how depression works, discovering their own vulnerabilities to depression onset, and reinforcing the elements of their lives and psyche which foster resiliience to depressive illness, clients are able to work with Ainsley collaboratively to develop and implement strategies to manage and take some degree of control of their illness, symptoms and life situation.
