Couples Therapy – Claire Pang

Claire Pang    Quals: B Psych Hons, Master of Clinical Psychology

Couples Therapy: When couples experience frequent conflicts, it can become a repetitive pattern of physical fights, verbal arguments and unresolved disputes. Caught up in this cycle of strong negative emotions, the couple finds it difficult to understand why they fight – and don’t know how to stop.

A trained psychologist can help you to understand how you argue in a predictable way, which can help couples who have been feeling powerless and unable to manage their conflicts. Therapy also assists couples to understand the causes of conflicts, and the vicious cycle that results from reacting to family conflict ineffectively. In couples therapy, the psychologist’s role is also to facilitate resolutions, through helping clients to identify what each partner could do to reduce conflict and heal hurts from the past.

Counselling Approach:  Claire is a Clinical Psychologist with specialist training in treating depression, anxiety, trauma and complex mental health conditions. She is result-orientated, practicing a wide range of therapeutic approaches with great success. In couples therapy, Claire adopts a combination of Interpersonal Therapy and Emotion-Focused Therapy to help couples to deal with the strong negative emotions associated with conflicts. More importantly, the therapy process aims to facilitate an emotional bond between couples.

Couples Therapy: When two people join together from two different family cultures, creating a new family culture, difficulties are bound to occur! Different family cultures have different implied family values, but when these values are not made explicit, conflict can arise. Bringing unaddressed family of origin issues into a relationship can create problems that are often confusing and overwhelming to both partners. Counselling Approach: Leonie uses a combination of Family Systems Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to develop an approach suited to her client’s individual needs. Within this framework, she remains solution-focussed, and works collaboratively with individuals to achieve the desired outcomes.

Fly in/ Fly out relationships: In an ever changing economic client, fly in and fly out or shift worker relationships are becoming an ever common reality in Australia.  This can cause separation issues, distrust, miscommunication or non-communication. Marriage Counselling – Tiegan Holtham

Tiegan Holtham      Quals: BBSc (Hons), MPsych (Clin), MAPS

Marriage counselling: Marriage can be the most rewarding and distressing relationship you will ever enter into! When people marry, they often aren’t expecting the many ways their relationship will change over time, and mismatched expectations can lead to relationships becoming conflictual, disjointed, unemotional and fractured. Feelings naturally fluctuate, but if they get out of balance, or become overly negative, it can become too distressing for the couple to manage on their own.  Blame, jealousy, dislike, affairs, and losing intimacy can all have a devastating effect on long term relationships. Seeking support from a couples therapist is a positive and effective step to moving past hurt and anger, and re-experiencing the joy and fulfilment of your earlier relationship.

Counselling Approach: Tiegan enjoys working with couples to rebuild their intimacy, love and enjoyment of one another. Tiegan uses a range of evidence based strategies with couples, including Gottman’s couples therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, skills training and compassion focused therapy. Tiegan works hard to ensure that neither member of the relationship feels blamed and acts as a neutral outsider to support both individuals to feel heard.

Current Availability: Usually within one week. Appointments available Saturdays.

Fees: Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $180 hr and $220 initial appointment. Medicare and health rebates available.
