Pain Management:  Chronic pain is a big problem in Australia. Increasingly psychologists are helping clients manage pain. I have worked with clients recovery from work related injuries as well as clients who have had long term problems with addiction to pain medication.

Counselling Approach: Mindfulness skills training, and Cognitive behaviour therapy have been proven to be effective in reducing the likelihood that someone will develop a serious disability following an injury. Sometimes the healing process will take months or years, and the best way to handle it is to pace yourself and try to think positively.

Chronic Medical Conditions – Lauren Burrow

Lauren Burrow       Quals: B. Psychological Science (Hons); Grad. Cert. Health Promotion

Chronic Medical Conditions: When chronic pain or injury strikes down a previously healthy individual, their whole world can be thrown into turmoil: changes to physical ability, energy-levels, recreational activities, as well as their relationships with others and view of themselves can be significantly impacted. Counselling can give people with chronic medical conditions a non-judgmental, confidential space to work through their grief at what they have lost, adjust their perspective if they are only able to see a negative view of their situation, and develop strategies for enhancing their life within the bounds of their medical restrictions.

Counselling Approach: When clients present with chronic medical conditions, Lauren treats with with sensitivity and compassion, and tries to create a space where their fears, concerns and worries can be heard without judgment. Lauren utilises therapeutic techniques from Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Solution-Focused Brief Therapy (SFBT) to assist clients with chronic medical conditions to adapt to their new changes, develop coping skills/strategies that work for them, as well as identify what is going well and helping them to build on these successes.
