CBT – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: In simple terms, CBT is an approach to psychotherapy which serves to identify and explore patterns of thinking and behaving which are contributing to a problematic emotional state. These thoughts and behaviours explored for the presence of inaccuracy, troublesome bias or distortion, and therapy then helps the client to reconstruct more helpful and more accurate ones.

Counselling ApproachAinsley’s approach to CBT is not about promoting wishful thinking, or a denial of reality; it is not about teaching you to believe something is ‘wonderful’ when it clearly is not. Conversely, her approach focuses on collaboratively trying to discern actual evidence and fact from inappropriate ‘meanings’ or ‘inaccurate conclusions’, correcting the distortions or faulty thinking, and supporting the individual to accept the reality as it actually is. Once this is achieved the nature of the issue to be addressed / stressor / challenge or problem is much clearer, allowing much more effective and focused problem solving strategies to be developed with her clients.

A Cognitive Behavioural therapeutic orientation encompasses a range of specific counselling and clinical techniques and approaches, and has been found to be extremely useful in a range of contexts and emotional disturbances – particularly depression and anxiety.

CBT – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) is an evidence-based approach to therapy that encourages people to understand their emotional lives by learning about how their physiological and emotional responses, their behaviour and their thoughts interact. We have limited control over our emotional responses, and we have some control over our thought patterns and how we react to them, and we have even more control over our behaviour. We can use the ability to direct these aspects of ourselves to achieve greater emotional balance.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a warm and compassionate way to help them to learn about their emotional responses and habits, and why they might be troubling them at the moment. I also work with a person to understand how certain behaviour and thought patterns may be maintaining difficult emotions, or making them stronger, By learning new ways of working with our bodies, interacting with our thoughts and behaviour, we can make significant improvements to our emotional wellbeing.

CBT – Greg Turner

Greg Turner   Quals: B App Sc, Grad Dip App Sc (App Psych), Cert GMH, MAPS

CBT: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is a comprehensive therapy that as the name suggests utilises both cognitive (thinking) approaches as well as behavioural (doing) approaches and is a practical and pragmatic approach that is particularly useful for treating Depression, Anxiety problems, and a broad range of issues. Through CBT individuals learn ways to re-frame their thinking to ways that are more useful and helpful, and to adapt their behaviour to include activities which are known to increase wellbeing and mental health, such as physical exercise. Once techniques are learnt they are then practised in the person’s daily life (sometimes referred to as ‘homework’) in between sessions with the psychologist. CBT has proved to be a very effective treatment modality, but of course the motivation of the client to do the hard work outside of their visits to the psychologist will determine the success of the treatment.

Counselling Approach: Greg has been practicing psychology for almost 20 years and takes a practical and pragmatic approach to counselling utilising a relaxed and informal approach which recognises that as human beings we all have times in our lives when things don’t go well, sometimes we fall down, and sometimes we need a bit of help. Greg is committed to helping his clients find solutions to their problems, to improve their situations in life, and to recover from the nasty things that life sometimes throws at us. Greg utilises humanistic approaches such as existential therapy (Logotherapy), interpersonal therapy, and Mindfulness, as well as practical approaches such as Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Solution Focussed Brief Therapy. For single event trauma Greg has achieved many successes with Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR) techniques.

Fees: Greg charges $195 for appointments. Medicare and health fund rebates may apply. Reduced fees may be possible for clients experiencing financial hardship.
