Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: In simple terms, CBT is an approach to psychotherapy which serves to identify and explore patterns of thinking and behaving which are contributing to a problematic emotional state. These thoughts and behaviours explored for the presence of inaccuracy, troublesome bias or distortion, and therapy then helps the client to reconstruct more helpful and more accurate ones.

Counselling ApproachAinsley’s approach to CBT is not about promoting wishful thinking, or a denial of reality; it is not about teaching you to believe something is ‘wonderful’ when it clearly is not. CBT: Although Dr Free was extensively trained in behaviour therapy, he is primarily a cognitive therapist. He has written “Cognitive Therapy in Groups“, a 24 session manual of group cognitive therapy that can be used in individual therapy and uses cognitive and schema focussed approaches in most cases.

Counselling Approach: Dr Free can undertake therapy in lots of different ways, usually determined by the wishes of the client. He uses therapy approaches that include Cognitive Therapy, Behaviour Therapy, CBT (Cognitive Behaviour Therapy), Schema Therapy, and Mindfulness-based meditation therapies.

CBT: Cognitive Behavioural Therapy, or CBT, is a comprehensive therapy that as the name suggests utilises both cognitive (thinking) approaches as well as behavioural (doing) approaches and is a practical and pragmatic approach that is particularly useful for treating Depression, Anxiety problems, and a broad range of issues. Through CBT individuals learn ways to re-frame their thinking to ways that are more useful and helpful, and to adapt their behaviour to include activities which are known to increase wellbeing and mental health, such as physical exercise. Once techniques are learnt they are then practised in the person’s daily life (sometimes referred to as ‘homework’) in between sessions with the psychologist. CBT has proved to be a very effective treatment modality, but of course the motivation of the client to do the hard work outside of their visits to the psychologist will determine the success of the treatment.
