Burnout – Jim Adsett

Jim Adsett   Quals: B Psych (Hons)

Burnout:  The key features of burnout are exhaustion, lack of motivation and feeling like you aren’t making a difference. In a job it means you basically stop caring about what you do. For example workers in a customer service role no longer care about the people they are paid to be nice too.

Counselling Approach: My key message with burnout is prevention is better than cure. I teach people to develop an internal “burnout radar” that lets them know when they are approaching serious burnout. I use techniques from acceptance and commitment therapy and Cognitive behaviour therapy to help the client to make changes in their life.

Burnout: Burnout is a state of chronic stress and can affect anyone with a high achiever personality that has the individual striving for excellence at all times! Individuals who are very serious about their responsibilities and obligations, may ignore the fact that they’re working exceptionally long hours, taking on other people’s responsibilities, and putting enormous pressure on themselves to ensure personal or work goals are achieved. Seeking support to help with managing your anxiety is a positive step to improving your quality of life and sense of self.

Counselling Approach: Leonie uses a combination of Family Systems Therapy, Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) and Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) to develop an approach suited to her client’s individual needs. Within this framework, she remains solution-focussed, and works collaboratively with individuals to achieve the desired outcomes.
