Bipolar Disorder: Bipolar Disorder causes intense shifts in mood, energy, and activity levels and significantly affects the ability to carry out day-to-day activities. You may experience episodes of feeling high, over-excited and reckless which can then shift to feeling extremely low, helpless and depressed with a drop in motivation.

Counselling Approach: Using a combination of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) we can work to reduce the impact of Bipolar Disorder in your life. Bipolar Disorder – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Bipolar Disorder: Some people suffer from intense mood swings, and may experience prolonged periods of deep depression during which it is difficult to engage with normal activities and life may not seem worthwhile. At other times, they may experience intense energy and a high mood, accompanied by a decreased need for sleep, and altered judgement. If this sounds like you, you may be suffering from Bipolar Disorder. If so, it is important to visit your GP and obtain a formal diagnosis before seeking therapy, because there are physical and endocrine conditions that can mimic Bipolar Disorder and medication may be necessary to stabilise your moods.

Counselling Approach: When working with someone who has a diagnosis of bipolar disorder, I take time to ensure that the person has a thorough understanding of the Disorder, and how it is likely to affect their life. I always work collaboratively to ensure that people are comfortable with their treatment plan, and feel empowered to make choices about their lifestyle. Treatment normally focuses on making lifestyle changes to help keep a balanced mood, stress management to limit the likelihood of stress-induced relapses, crisis planning so that if a relapse occurs the person has some control over their acute crisis, and looking at through and behaviour patterns that may predict and maintain fluctuating moods, and working to establish more healthy patterns.
