Career Coaching – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Career Coaching: Work, in all of its many forms, has the potential to enrich our lives in significant and lasting ways.  Finding the right path for us, balancing work with other life priorities, making career changes and resolving any career relevant conflicts / obstacles / dilemmas, dealing with career disappointment or unwanted changes however can present us with significant challenge.

Given that we spend a significant proportion of our lives in our workplaces and engaged in work related activity –  making financially and psychologically wise career decisions is a complex though vitally important undertaking.   In terms of the interplay between  wellness and work – our brains are shaped (and re-shaped continuously) by our environment – this is now much better understood than it ever has been thanks to great leaps in neuroscience over the past decade and a half.

Counselling Approach: As well as her credentials as a psychologist, Ainsley has tertiary qualifications and career experience in Human Resources, and has also worked as a People Management Consultant providing advice to Senior Level across a wide range of industries.   As a result, she has an intimate and hands-on knowledge of workplace and organisational dynamics and how these can interplay with our overall sense of  psychological wellness, satisfaction, enrichment and motivation.

CBT – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Cognitive Behaviour Therapy: In simple terms, CBT is an approach to psychotherapy which serves to identify and explore patterns of thinking and behaving which are contributing to a problematic emotional state. These thoughts and behaviours explored for the presence of inaccuracy, troublesome bias or distortion, and therapy then helps the client to reconstruct more helpful and more accurate ones.

Counselling ApproachAinsley’s approach to CBT is not about promoting wishful thinking, or a denial of reality; it is not about teaching you to believe something is ‘wonderful’ when it clearly is not. Conversely, her approach focuses on collaboratively trying to discern actual evidence and fact from inappropriate ‘meanings’ or ‘inaccurate conclusions’, correcting the distortions or faulty thinking, and supporting the individual to accept the reality as it actually is. Once this is achieved the nature of the issue to be addressed / stressor / challenge or problem is much clearer, allowing much more effective and focused problem solving strategies to be developed with her clients.

A Cognitive Behavioural therapeutic orientation encompasses a range of specific counselling and clinical techniques and approaches, and has been found to be extremely useful in a range of contexts and emotional disturbances – particularly depression and anxiety.

Employee Assistance Programs – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Employee Assistance Programs:  Employee Assistance Programs (EAP) are where an organisation or employer partners with a provider to supply its employees with access to counselling services. These counselling services are generally funded by the employing organisation and focus on promoting positive workplace behaviours, constructive and mutually respectful interpersonal interactions, employee well-being, and workplace productivity.

The focus of such counselling may include a variety of issues which are impacting, or likely to impact an employee’s job performance, job satisfaction, health or productivity eg crisis response; conflict resolution; workplace stress; family based issues affecting work; adjustment to illness or injury; grief; workplace bullying; substance use; relationship disharmony and conflict.

Counselling under an Employee Assistance Program would need to be contracted and arranged by prior agreement with your employing organisation. Usually an EAP type series of counselling sessions would involve a committment of between 3 to 6 hourly sessions of counselling designed to focus directly on the issue(s) most impacting on work life and performance.

Counselling Approach: Ainsley‘s approach when counselling under an Employee Assistance Program is aimed at addressing the issue/s most impacting on an employee’s enjoyment or ability to perform at work. In the first session she typically works with clients to help them clarify and articulate a series of short-term focussed counselling goals and an overall treatment plan for achievement of these. Counselling goals when working under an EAP should be realistic enough as to be achieveable within the scope of such a short-term, solution focussed intervention. Should a client’s goals be broader or of a longer term nature than is appropriately achieved within 3 to 6 hourly sessions; and/or the impact on work performance questionable, then this will be discussed and a more appropriate plan contracted with the counselling client and the employer (if appropriate).

Depression – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Depression: Sadness is a normal human experience – we all feel low, flat, disappointed and sad as a healthy and adaptive response to events. Depression is different to ‘healthy’ sadness in that it is  experienced more intensely and largely urelentingly, for a longer period of time, and at a far greater cost to the normal life and functioning of sufferers. Depression is also experienced differently by different individuals – for example males who are depressed are less likely to have a sadness-dominant depression and more likely to experience greater irritability and/or physical complaints in response to the ‘hopelessness’ and ‘despair’ of depression. Depression is in fact one of the most common mental health problems with roughly one in five people experiencing the condition at some stage in their lives.

There are a number of factors which increase the risk of onset of depression: some of these relate to recent events (stress, disputes, disappointments, recent hardship, alcohol and substance use); and other risk factors relate to  person-centred factors (certain personality traits like perfectionism, history of adverse experiences, genetics and biology, health).

Counselling Approach: In treating depression, Ainsley utilises a variety of therapeautic approaches which fall within the family of Cognitive Based Therapies, and Interpersonal Psychotherapies.  She works collaboratively with the client to identify the aspects of their life and psyche which are in relative ‘good health’, and engages and builds these elements against those parts which are in ‘poor health’ or very affected by the impact of depression.

By teaching people how depression works, discovering their own vulnerabilities to depression onset, and reinforcing the elements of their lives and psyche which foster resiliience to depressive illness, clients are able to work with Ainsley collaboratively to develop and implement strategies to manage and take some degree of control of their illness, symptoms and life situation.

EMDR Therapy – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

EMDR Therapy: EMDR is a cognitive-behaviourally underpinned, evidence-based treatment which has well-documented successful outcomes treating PTSD, disturbing memories, phobias, somatic symptoms, substance and behavioural addictions.  EMDR therapy involves careful preparation phases to ensure that those undergoing the treatment understand and are familiar with the processes utilised, and are able to effectively tolerate any distress arising from accessing relevant troublesome memories.  EMDR then enables the person undergoing treatment to rapidly access traumatic memories and process them emotionally and cognitively towards resolution – effectively allowing clients to ‘shed’ outdated modes of coping or responding which have been locked in their bodies and memory system.

After successful treatment with EMDR, emotional distress is relieved, negative self beliefs are reformulated into healthy and adaptive self-statments , and physiological arousal associated with stress is reduced.  Successful treatment allows the person to live engaged in the present rather than ‘haunted’, distracted or hijacked by past events.

As the name of the therapy suggests, eye movements form part of the mechanism for assisting natural brain-based systems to digest and neutralise disturbance.  Other forms of encouraging the brain to process information in this way may include other forms of bi-lateral (ie side to side) stimulation such as sounds or tapping.

Counselling Approach: Ainsley’s approach is very down to earth, collaborative, structured, integrative and supported.  She aims to support her clients to understand their psychological experience in a manner which is factual, informational, relatable and perspective enabling.   She is always very thorough in ensuring that her clients are sufficiently well resourced, supported and informed throughout any trauma based work to ensure that this difficult work for clients is productive and facilitative of forward momentum towards healing.

Stress – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Stress: Stress is a normal part of our human experience – and can even serve to facilitate performance, focus and appropriate action.  However when stress is excessive or prolonged it can tip our psychological and biological balance to the extent that we experience serious and debilitating outcomes.  High and/or prolonged levels of stress can trigger a downward spiral undermining a person’s ability to cope with existing and new challenges, impede clear thinking, diminishing energy and cognitive ability, eroding self confidence, negatively impacting on performance and life satisfaction, demoralising mood, and destabilising interpersonal relationships with other people.  It has also been linked to a range of serious health conditions including (but not limited to) cardiovascular disease, musculoskeletal disorders, gastrointestinal disorders, immune system suppression.

Counselling Approach: Ainsley’s approach in supporting clients experiencing stress related challenges and impairment is multi-faceted and seeks to understand and address biological, psychological and social factors relevant to her client’s current experience. She seeks to help her clients better understand how their brains and bodies respond to stress, and to develop a range of psychological skills geared towards supporting effective action and restoring wellness.

Interpersonal Psychotherapy – Ainsley Salsbury

Ainsley Salsbury       Quals: BA (Psych), PG Dip App Psych, B Bus (HRM)

Interpersonal Psychotherapy: Human beings are fundamentally psycho-social beings. That is, we are drawn to each other for comfort and connection, and have an amazing ability to support, reassure, protect and heal each other. When we feel alone or isolated, generally we are more emotionally vulnerable to the distress caused by the problems, stresses and challenges that life inevitably sends our way. At times however, particularly under times of stress, our ability to motivate or engage others to care and comfort us can be depleted. Or it may actually be others who are causing our distress.

Counselling Approach: Ainsley‘s counselling approach in interpersonal psychotherapy is to support people to more positively ‘connect’ and receive comfort and support from important others in their lives; to establish or reinforce social networks; heal interpersonal injuries; resolve conflict or disputes; move through the process of ‘grief and loss’ of people in their lives; and to transition to new interpersonal roles.
