Adjustment to Change: For most people, change involves some degree of stress. Some individuals can find life changes – such as marrying or entering into a live-in relationship with their partner; becoming a parent; moving house, city and/or country; separation, divorce or widowhood; moving to a new school; or starting a new job – so stressful, that an “adjustment disorder” may develop.

Counselling Approach: A psychologist with many years of experience, Susanne Gilmour has found that with support and counsel, her clients have found that the mood experienced (similar to depression and anxiety) is  usually short-lived, unless there is some trauma in the background. Cognitive Behaviour Therapy is particularly effective in treating most adjustment disorders.

Adjustment to change: Life throws us challenges at times and often with little to no time to contemplate how we are going to manage before we have to. Adjustment to Change: One thing we can be sure of in life is that change is inevitable. Whether we welcome a change, or fight the change that is happening, stress can be part of this process. Signs that you may be having issues with adjustment to change include feeling down or unusually elevated, being self-destructive, having poor sleep quality, ongoing issues with concentration and/or decision making, as well as anxiety symptoms. Adjustment to Change: Even with the best-laid plans, life can throw a curve ball at us: whether it be the break-down of what we had thought was a strong relationship (whether with a partner, friend or member of the family), loss of employment due to unexpected redundancy or injury, through to health problems that have led to a reduction in our quality of life. These situations can leave even the seemingly strong people amongst us struggling to keep up with the changes, manage the new stressors, and adapt to the new circumstances. Adjustment to Change: Change can occur in all different shapes and sizes. Change might be graduating school and going to university, having a baby, getting a divorce or moving house. Some of these changes may be challenging, stressful or scary and have an effect on your day-to-day life. An unexpected negative change can even cause you to feel overwhelmed, depressed or anxious. If these feelings come up for you, it may be helpful to talk to a therapist to help you process and adjust to the change so that you can move forward.

Counselling approach: Melanie is passionate about helping clients to lead healthy and fulfilling lives. She uses Interpersonal Therapy (IPT) to help clients to define the old role and new role din a balanced and realistic way, accept the emotional component of the loss of the old role and develop and implement skills and attitudes that overcome the perceived challenges of the new role.
