Addictions Counselling – Dr David Wells

Dr David Wells      Quals: B Psych (Hons), Dip Prof Couns, D Psych (Clin Geropsychology).

Addictions Counselling: Behaviours that are not good for us are easy to acquire. Alcohol is legal, so is tobacco smoking. But it is very simple for these behaviours and others to become bad for us. Bad for our health, relationships, work lives and for the individual. We may drift into behaviours that are not legal or socially outdated. When these behaviours become a problem, we need help.

Counselling Approach: First up is admitting that there is a problem. Many clients find this a problem, although other people telling you it is a problem is a good sign. Having admitted the issue, it is important to recognise that you have done well already, and that changing behaviour is the next goal. It may be small steps to begin with, but with a good therapist by your side, anything is achievable. Work in this area of human behaviour is about noticing the good work that has been done, and learning from any backward steps that are taken.

Addictions – Trudy Sheffield

Trudy Sheffield       Quals: Bachelor of Behavioural Science (Hons)

Addictions: Addiction is the condition of being habitually occupied with or involved in something. Physiological or psychological dependence, such as a substance or an activity, significantly impact on cognitive processes and behaviours.  These effects negatively impact on the health status and functioning of individuals.  For example, frequent use of a substance can lead to the development of dependence and associated withdrawal, damage to physical and mental health, accidents and injury, family and social disruption, workplace concerns and violence and crime.  Trudy works with clients who are experiencing life disturbances due to addictions and are contemplating change. Individuals with drug related or other addictions deserve to be extended the same rights that apply to all. Trudy demonstrates a commitment to professional interventions with appropriate outcome goals that are practical and achievable. Continual assessment, negotiation and evaluations of these goals help to avoid discrepancies and maximize change for the client.

Counselling Approach: Trudy has an engaging and realistic approach to therapy, and draws on a variety of evidence-based approaches to collaboratively develop a plan to suit each client. Her therapeutic orientation is a combination of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Mindfulness and Motivational Enhancement Therapy.

Addictions Counselling – Paul Carver

Paul Carver    Quals: BSc, MSc, PG Dip Hlth Psych

Addictions Counselling: Addictions are very destructive, and even though we know that we could lose everything we value as a result of them, we seem powerless to stop our behaviour.

The power of the addiction comes not from the substance or addictive object, but the internal state of the person using it. Addictions are connected to what we need for our emotional survival; they are driven by intolerable or very unpleasant feelings that we feel we need to escape from (such as numbness, anxiety, feeling flat, helpless, continually stressed, empty, down) because they feel unworkable. Going right to the heart of the problem, and working with the feelings that we cannot easily bear, Paul has found that addictions can be unravelled at their core.

Counselling Approach: Paul has a very flexible approach, and a great toolbox from which the right solution for each person can be discovered. He uses Motivational Interviewing, CBT, Relapse Prevention and Interpersonal Psychotherapy, depending on the individual’s need.

Fees:  Sliding Scale depending on circumstances, usually $195/hr and $240 initial appt. Reduced rates may be available for those on a pension. Appointments available Sundays.

Addictions – Laura Fleming

Laura Fleming    Quals: BA&Sc, Grad Dip Psych, M Psych (Forensic).

Addictions: Laura works with clients who may be experiencing an addiction to a substance or activity that is causing distress in their lives or those around them. Addictions can be too many things but may include drugs (illegal and prescribed); food; technology (Facebook, gaming), or pornography. The difference between an interest in something and an addiction is that in an addiction this comes before other important aspects of life and cannot be ignored. For instance, someone might stop working, fail to eat or shower, or miss family functions. Treatment goals with addictions are to be able to return to a balanced life.

Counselling Approach: Laura works from a client-centred perspective – listening to the story of the client and letting the client set the goals, whilst utilising her psychological skills to assist the client to develop their own skills to achieve their goals. This can incorporate aspects of Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) including Mindfulness, Motivational Interviewing and Narrative Therapy. She is experienced in working with young people from various cultural backgrounds, including Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander.

Addictions Counselling – Dr Catherine Hynes

Dr Catherine Hynes   Quals: Phd (Clinical Psychology & Clinical Neuropsychology), MA (Cognitive Neuroscience), BA Hons (Philosophy & Neuroscience)

Addictions Counselling: Life presents everybody with challenges, and we all must find ways to cope with stress and difficult emotions. When people use addictive substances or addictive activities as their main coping strategies, they can lose control of these behaviours and find themselves in difficulty. Often, the key to resolving an addiction is to explore the purpose the behaviour serves, and the reasons a person might want to change the behaviour. This usually clarifies how the behaviour has become a problem, and waht areas need to be developed in order to cope with challenges without the the addictive behaviour.

Counselling Approach: I work with people in a person-centred way to help them figure out what is and isn’t working with their current coping strategies, and to help them choose and practice more helpful ways of coping in the present and future. I always work from a motivational interviewing perspective, helping people to resolve their natural ambivalence about change, and work according to their values.

If a client identifies current thought and behaviour patterns that are maintaining the addictive behaviour, then I may use cognitive behaviour therapy (CBT). If these patterns originated in childhood or adolescence, then I may use Schema Focused Therapy. When a client has analysed thought patterns and recognises them as unhelpful, but is struggling to move on, I may use Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) is an option for a person whose addiction has strong physical associations.
