Child and Adolescent Anxiety – Dr Rose Gillett

Dr Rose Gillett      Quals: B Psych (Hons), D Psych (Clin), MAPS

Child and Adolescent Anxiety: Anxiety is a difficult experience for anyone no matter their age. For a young person, anxiety can be crippling and impact on their lives from home to school, interfering with ability to make friends, complete schoolwork, or sleep in their own bed. It can be difficult to recognize anxiety in a young person due to their efforts to hide it and appear “confident.” Early detection and seeking support is very important in helping young people with anxiety achieve their full potential.

Counselling Approach: Rose works with Cognitive Behaviour Therapy (CBT) and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT) to treat anxiety with children and young people. She believes understanding of anxiety and how it is maintained is vital, followed through with clear, effective skill building to treat the physical, behavioural, and cognitive symptoms.

Depression – Mia Olsson

Mia Olsson       Quals: BA Psych (Hons), Dip Nurs, Assoc MAPS

Depression: Depression is a recognised condition that can affect anyone at any time of life. You may not feel bad all day, however in general your mood and thinking can be very negative. You may also have trouble with sleep, appetite, and feel very lethargic and unmotivated. Trying to ‘snap out of it’ or ‘just get yourself together’ may help temporarily, however therapy and/or medication may be required for longer term results. If you are unsure why life looks and feels different, visiting your doctor or psychologist may help you to move forward and feel better sooner rather than later.

Counselling Approach: Mia believes that every client who attends the clinic has their own story, their own challenges to overcome, and a specific set of values that drive their life choices. Mia endeavours to accommodate individual differences and assist clients to reach achievable goals. She focuses on Cognitive and Behaviour therapies with an emphasis on self-empowerment to help you build a sense of control and mastery whilst regaining a strong sense of self.

Child and Adolescent Anxiety – Leia Redman

Leia Redman Quals: B. Psych; M. Psych (Clinical); MAPS; CCLIN

Separation Anxiety:  When a young child feels worried or anxious when having to say goodbye to mum or dad, it is commonly referred to as “separation anxiety”. Although separation anxiety is considered a natural stage of development up to the age of about 6 years, it can be a distressing time for both the child and parents. Separation Anxiety becomes a disorder when the anxiety experienced by the child becomes so intense that it interferes with their school attendance, academic performance, social activities and home environment.

Counselling Approach:  Leia uses evidence based therapeutic techniques in her treatment with clients. For the treatment of Separation Anxiety Disorder Leia uses a combination of Cognitive Behaviour Therapy and Acceptance and Commitment Therapy. It is important to establish rapport with the child and this is often developed through the use of Play Therapy. Leia also actively engages the parent/s in the therapeutic process to address effective Parenting Strategies which are vital in helping their child manage the anxiety.
